The third day of the Africa Cup of Nations 2021 sees the opening matches in Groups D and E forming the schedule in Cameroon on Tuesday on a day where another bunch of title contenders will grace the tournament for the first time.
We have arguably the best side in Africa on show over the course of the day as well as the best player in the continent on what might be the most entertaining day of the fledgling competition to date.

Algeria vs Sierra Leone (13.00)
The opening match of Tuesday is one of the biggest mismatches in Africa Cup of Nations history as far as the odds are concerned as Algeria take on Sierra Leone in the first match in Group E of the competition.
Sierra Leone can be backed at as high as 55/1 to win this match which shows what should be the gulf in class between these two sides. This match is clearly all about Algeria. The defending champions are the standout side in Africa at the minute and should get the chance to show that in this match. You would imagine this will be damage limitation for Sierra Leone but it will be interesting to see if they can exploit any sign of weakness in this Algeria side. I am in the camp of many in terms of expecting a comfortable Algeria win but we saw in the Senegal vs Zimbabwe game on Monday that the conditions in the 1pm kick offs are energy zapping and very tough so that might hamper Algeria in running up the score. I’m happy to leave this one alone.

Nigeria vs Egypt (16.00)
The big match of day three of the Africa Cup of Nations sees two of the African powerhouses going at it when Nigeria take on Egypt in the first match in Group D of the competition and one which might give us an indication over where the title might go this season.
Egypt arrive in Cameroon expected to put up a strong tilt at the title but they will have to defy that terrible statistic that North African sides don’t win further south. Nigeria don’t have that problem but they need to show that their superstar individuals can blend as a team if they want to get where they want to. Often in these big clashes a star man settles the deal and if that is the case here then you would have to edge with Egypt and Mo Salah but I think I can afford to watch both these sides and assess them rather than bet on this one.
Sudan vs Guinea-Bissau (19.00)
The final match of the day sees the two minnows in Group D battling it out when Sudan make their return to the competition after a spell away from it as they go up against Guinea-Bissau in a match both teams know they can’t afford to lose if they are going to give themselves a chance of qualifying for the next stage.
With the other two sides in the group looking far superior to these two even a draw isn’t likely to get these two anywhere so I’m expecting to see both teams have a good go at this one in a bid to get the winner. We’ve generally seen the best attacking games come in these later matches when the conditions relent a little and allow the players to play. These two played in a World Cup qualifier a few months ago which Guinea-Bissau won 4-2 which gives me more confidence that there will be goals in this game. Backing the over in this tournament is a fast route to the poor house but there are times when every rule has an exemption and given that the goal line for this one is only 1.75 goals I think this could be it.
