Preview

The action begins in Group F, a group which shot this competition to the headlines after the controversy of the opening set of matches within it. Mali couldn’t care less about that as they came away with a win and they open the day with a clash against the other winners from the opening set of matches in Gambia. When those two are done the two first game losers play for their lives in the tournament when Tunisia, who were on the wrong end of that controversy, take on Mauritania in a match the North Africans should be looking to win.

It is Group E which forms the action in the latter part of the day and the proceedings in that section begins with an Ivory Coast side who will be eyeing up the chance to make it through to the knockout stages of the tournament at the first opportunity when they meet Sierra Leone who had a great result in the opening game. That result came in the form of a draw with the defending champions Algeria and it is they who close out the show when they take on Equatorial Guinea who will be near enough out with another defeat.

Betting

I’m not going to go too mad in these matches but we continued to see the bigger teams putting the lesser teams to the sword in this round of games on Saturday when Nigeria eased past Sudan and I’m expecting Ivory Coast to do the same to Sierra Leone. I’m not as hung up on this Ivory Coast side as I have been on previous ones and their dismal showing in World Cup qualifying suggests this isn’t a great crop of players but they are playing with the confidence of a win under their belt and that can be all important.

I think you have to respect Sierra Leone for the point they picked up against Algeria in their opening match but at the same time it should be noted they offered little of note in attacking areas and were heavily reliant on their goalkeeper to earn that point. Ivory Coast will be disappointed they couldn’t kick on having taken the lead so early in their opener but the goals they didn’t get can come here against a Sierra Leone side who might pay for the huge effort they put in against Algeria to start their campaign.
