NFL 2022 – Pittsburgh Steelers @ Indianapolis Colts Tips and Betting Preview

Two teams with a losing record battle it out in a surprise choice for the Monday Night Football to conclude another week of NFL 2022 action when the Indianapolis Colts welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers to Lucas Oil Stadium.

It is going to take something pretty special for the Indianapolis Colts to make it through to the postseason but the Steelers are already playing for next season so it will be interesting to see how this one plays out.

Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are 4-6-1 for their season and have lost four of their last five matches but two of those have been by a solitary point so this is very much a campaign which will be loaded with regret should Indianapolis not get into the postseason. With the way the Tennessee Titans are playing you would think the Colts are only playing for a wildcard and if they are to keep those hopes realistic then you would imagine this is a match they have to win.

Indianapolis will need their offense to come to the party if that is going to happen. One of the reason why their record is indifferent this term is because of their inability to put 20 points on the board. Their defence has kept them in a lot of matches but for some reason when the time arrives to pull the trigger and take control of the key moments they don’t seem able to do it. That has to change and it really needs to change here.

Pittsburgh Steelers

This was always going to be a season of transition for the Pittsburgh Steelers because they never really groomed a replacement for Ben Roethlisberger and were shockingly short on replacements when he retired at the end of last term. They had the intention of going with Mitchell Trubisky for this season but that plan ended quickly as most expected and now it is the rookie trigger man Kenny Pickett who has been assigned the task of replacing Roethlisberger.

As a result of all of those struggles in the quarterback position, the Steelers are 3-7 for the season and the only thing they are playing for, aside from the future of the rookie quarterback, is to spoil a few parties. The positive part of the season for Pittsburgh is in the main their defence is still holding up. That seems silly to say after they shipped 37 points last week but their stats against the run are encouraging and with Minkah Fitzpatrick getting back to full strength the pass defence should improve.

Betting

This is a tricky match to bet on. We have two teams who in 21 matches have seven wins between them and with the exception of Jonathan Taylor there isn’t really many out and out stars who are playing well on offense. We also have a couple of sides who find it hard to get over the line when the winning line comes about and if that isn’t enough we have a point total in the high 30s and it only needs one special play and that would be in trouble as well.

That leaves me with just the one bet and it comes in the total field goals market. These two defences are good enough to keep drives under control, especially the run defences so it might be that drives stall in the red zone. Both these kickers have been pretty active recently and with the defences likely to be on top in the main in this match it might be that teams are forced to go for field goals rather than risk short fourth down plays. The price on over 3.5 field goals is a big one and I’m happy to take my chances.
