European Darts Open 2023 – Last 16 Tips and Betting Preview

It is the final day of the European Darts Open on Sunday when as ever in a European Tour event the competition plays down from the last 16 until we determine the champion across two sessions of play in Leverkusen.

We saw one or two big names fall by the wayside on Saturday but in the main the majority of them have come through which should make for some great Sunday action. Once again time restrictions will deny us the chance to cover the evening session but we’ll go through the last 16 in the afternoon here.

First Four Matches

We begin with the winner of the first European Tour event of the season taking to the stage when Dave Chisnall looks to make another quarter final at the expense of the former UK Open champion Danny Noppert. Damon Heta will look to make a stage quarter final in the second match of the afternoon. The talented Ryan Meikle will be his opponent. The remainder of the first half of the afternoon is lit as two of the last three world champions meet in the third match when the current champion of the world, Michael Smith, takes on Gerwyn Price and then we hit the interval with a clash between Michael van Gerwen and Dimitri Van den Bergh.

Later Four Matches

Another former world champion brings us out of the interval when Stephen Bunting is back on this stage. He will go up against the one remaining home player Ricardo Pietreczko, who had a good win over Peter Wright on Saturday evening. When they are done Rob Cross will bid to continue a return to form when he takes on a William O’Connor who is no stranger to going deep on a Sunday on the European Tour. The penultimate match of the afternoon sees Dirk van Duijvenbode going up against the European champion Ross Smith. Two of the finest from Northern Ireland meet in the last game when Brendan Dolan takes on Josh Rock.

Betting

Gerwyn Price looks to be in an incredibly rich vein of form at the minute and I think he should be slightly shorter to beat Michael Smith than he is. Smith is a class act we know that but in the Premier League he has lost his last three matches and he lost in this round of the opening European Tour event too. He only averaged 90 in his win on Saturday and at times in the Premier League we haven’t seen that insane scoring he can deliver.

That is something which can’t be levelled at Price. He won the Premier League night on Thursday in Newcastle when he averaged 114.96 in the final against Michael van Gerwen and he registered an average of 109.03 in his win over Krzysztof Ratajski here on Saturday. If Price is anywhere near that level in this match even someone with the class of Michael Smith is going to struggle to keep pace with him. Price said the other night that he’s beginning to feel good about his game and the evidence of that is clear for all to see. I think he’ll have enough to come through here.
