A busy Sunday in the NFL concludes with the first Sunday Night Football of the season which takes us to the MetLife Stadium for the first time in the NFL 2023 campaign as the New York Giants host bitter NFC East rivals Dallas Cowboys.
These two don’t get along and so this is a great way for us to watch them open a season in which both will believe they have it within the depths of their locker room to make it all the way to the Super Bowl this term.
New York Giants
The New York Giants had a miracle season last term and now they have to prove that wasn’t a fluke and that they can go again. Brian Daboll led the Giants to the postseason last term and there is a consensus that the NFC is a weaker proposition this year so a wildcard spot could well be within reach but some of the numbers the G-men put up last term look unsustainable so they are going to need to show some improvement.
The big thing for the Giants in the off-season was that Saquon Barkley finally committed to another year in New Jersey and he will see a lot of action in this match as the Giants’ offensive line look to keep Micah Parsons and co away from their quarterback. The Giants’ own defence might face a lot more of the run in this match than they have in recent battles with the Cowboys. Giants will be looking to end a four-match losing battle against Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys continue to arrive into seasons with a Super Bowl winning roster at their disposal but as yet they haven’t even made it to the big dance let alone won the game. The Cowboys keep on finding someone too good for them in the playoffs which they will hope is not the case this time around. If they are going to make it through to the latter stages of the season then they could help themselves a touch by winning the NFC East and a win here will go a decent way to doing that.
This will be the first time we see the Dallas offense without offensive co-ordinator Kellen Moore. It looks as though they will run a more balanced offense, which will both assist the durability of Dak Prescott and eliminate the impact of the number of interceptions he throws. With Ezekiel Elliott now a thing of the past in Arlington, it will be Tony Pollard who is the man assigned with leading the Dallas charge here. If that balanced offense fires and Parsons disrupts the Giants run game, Dallas will fancy their chances here.
Betting
The opening week of the NFL 2023 season has been rather low scoring so far and I don’t see that changing too much here. The Dallas defence has had something of the Indian sign over the Giants’ offense in recent times, keeping them to 20 points or fewer in the last four matches between these two and there is nothing to suggest that is going to change here unless Barkley has a real night out or the Giants’ defence come up with points.
This Dallas offense is in the process of being modified and while Brandin Cooks is a good addition to the passing game, there seems to be a determination for shorter and quicker passes to try to nullify the interceptions or wayward passes Prescott has a habit of throwing. A lot more runs will be dialled up too if the offense Mike McCarthy called in Green Bay is anything to go by so I’m expecting two fierce rivals to deliver on a fair number of longer drives but with connections and combinations still being established this early in the season a 46 point line looks a touch on the high side to me.
