The SA20 competition continues on Monday when the roadshow heads back to Kingsmead in Durban as the Durban’s Super Giants look to continue their perfect start when they play host to the Joburg Super Kings.
Durban have played two matches this season and won them both and they are setting the early pace. Joburg have had one washed out and been beaten in the other so they will be out for their first win here.
Durban’s Super Giants
The Durban’s Super Giants were my pick to win this tournament before a ball was bowled in this season and we have seen exactly why. I always had the thought that this would be a high scoring competition and that is exactly how it is playing out and no team has the potential to score bigger than the Super Giants when everyone clicks into gear. We’ve seen that in both of their matches as they would have plundered more than 200 both times.
The encouraging thing for Durban is that they scored 200 in their last match with Heinrich Klaasen only walking to the wicket with 14 balls left of the innings. If you were being picky and wanted to find a concern then it would come in their bowling attack. They have conceded 190 in both their matches and at some point that might cost them but they just have so much firepower at their disposal that it is hard to believe they all fail together.
Joburg Super Kings
The Joburg Super Kings have had a slow start to the season with a washout and a very hefty loss and at some point if they are going to make their way into the playoffs then they are probably going to have to make up for the margin of that defeat at some point because it has had a negative impact on their net run rate. Before then though they have to get wins on the board and they would like that to happen here even though they are on the road.
The big concern from that defeat was how easily the MI Cape Town side smashed 243/5 against them. The caveat is that when the wicket is good for batting in Johannesburg the bowlers have no chance but they seemed to buckle under pressure and that doesn’t bode well. It is hard to judge their batting on that effort because they needed more than two a ball from the outset and it is never easy to go at that pace for a whole innings.

Key Players
Nicholas Pooran reminded everyone of the brutal hitting ability that he has last time out for the Durban’s Super Giants. He and Heinrich Klaasen might be having their own big hitting duel but not many can contain Pooran when he gets going.
There weren’t many positives for the Joburg Super Kings in their last game but Leus du Plooy did look like he was hitting it well with the bat. He bats at four in this side so he is going to need to contribute a big season if the Super Kings are to do anything.
Betting
The trend of this tournament so far has been high scoring matches and I’m not expecting any different here. Durban’s Super Giants have shown that they are going to pepper the boundaries throughout an innings and keep going even if they lose wickets and if Joburg bowl like they did in the last game then their attack could get some serious collateral damage done to it but we’ve also seen that the Durban attack can go the distance as well.
The question then comes in how best to play the game and I think taking the boundaries line is the way forward here. There is always that possibility that the Joburg attack go round the park and their batters falter in the chase leaving the run line short of what is quite a high total at 343.5, however if that has happened then the boundaries are likely to have been peppered to the extent that we won’t need too many from them to have a 41.5 line covered. We saw 50 boundaries in the first game here and there would have been more than that if the rain hadn’t arrived when it did. I like the over here.
