Premier League 2024-25 – Saturday 19th October Matches Tips and Betting Preview

The Premier League comes out of the international break on Saturday afternoon when seven matches take place over the course of a day where the 14 teams in action will look to hit the ground running before the next stoppage in three weeks.

This is a typical Saturday for us in the UK with the day bookended by TV matches with one at the start and the end of the day. The other five matches will come with all the usual updates in the typical places for them.

Early Kick Off

We begin with a London derby between two rival sides when Tottenham Hotspur look to bounce back from that incredible defeat at Brighton last time out when they play host to a West Ham United side who finally offered up what was expected of them against Ipswich Town prior to the international break and will be looking to back that up at a ground where their fans will be desperate for them to win at. Tottenham can’t keep losing without their being repercussions so this one is a very interesting start to the day.

3pm Matches

Speaking of managers who are under pressure, there can’t be too many in the league under more than Erik ten Hag and he will be looking to ease the burden on his shoulders when his Manchester United side host a dangerous Brentford outfit. Aston Villa will be in Champions League action next week but before they embark on their third game in that competition they have an awkward looking trip to Craven Cottage to take on Fulham to overcome.

There are three other matches in the traditional slot where two promoted sides meet at St Mary’s Stadium where you would imagine Russell Martin could really do with a win when his Southampton side host Leicester City. The pick of the Saturday matches could well come from St James’ Park where Newcastle United host a very inconsistent, wide open but entertaining Brighton and Hove Albion side. The other match sees Ipswich Town looking for their first win back in the Premier League when they entertain Everton.

Late Game

We conclude the day on the south coast at the Vitality Stadium where AFC Bournemouth will look to bounce back from their surprising defeat at Leicester City prior to the international break when they host the title challengers Arsenal in the late kick off. With Manchester City and Liverpool not playing until later in the weekend, Arsenal will go top of the table for roughly 24 hours at least if they come out on top here. Bournemouth have been better than their results have suggested and shouldn’t be taken lightly so this looks like a decent closer to the day.

Betting

I like a couple of bets over the course of the day in the Premier League on Saturday. The first comes at St Mary’s Stadium where I just can’t be having Southampton as favourites against anyone, least of all a Leicester City side who won the two meetings between the pair 9-1 last season. That isn’t the only nine that Leicester have put past Southampton in the not too recent past either. I don’t think any of the three sides who went up will stay up but at least Leicester have won a match so they can attack this with a little more freedom than a Southampton side who shoot themselves in the foot way too often and for my money have nothing like enough quality at the top end of the pitch to accommodate for that. I expect Southampton to finish bottom of the table. I did before the season started and nothing has changed my mind. I still think Leicester will go down but they’ll put up much more of a fight and getting a quarter of a goal on the Asian lines I have to be with the team who have won a game, drawn three others, lost two more by the odd goal and were injury time away from holding Arsenal. Leicester on the start for me here.

The other bet I like is for Newcastle United and Brighton and Hove Albion to play out something of a goal fest and I’m a little surprised there is an acceptable price on over 3 in this match. Brighton have laid their stall out to play with one of the highest lines in the league and while that condenses the play and allows them to flood the opposition half, it is a risky strategy against a Newcastle side that have the pace of Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy and others to take advantage of that. Newcastle aren’t averse to playing on the counter while Brighton will be happy to dominate the ball and so both teams should get what they want here and with Alexander Isak possibly back on top of that we should get what we want which is at least four goals from the game.
