The inaugural Global Super League begins on Tuesday night when teams from five countries meet in a T20 competition which will offer up the chance for some cricket watching in the winter and hopefully plenty of winning bets.
The tournament takes place in Guyana from start to finish and with the event having 11 matches which should see a number of bets being had over the 12 days that the competition will be in operation for.
The Format
The five teams all begin the tournament in one round robin group where everyone plays the other four teams once. At the end of that stage of the competition the top two teams will play out the final on Saturday 7th December. The entire tournament will be at the Providence Stadium in Guyana and this is a T20 competition from start to finish. UK TV coverage will be provided by TNT Sports but certain bookmakers will stream all of the matches as well.
The Teams
Guyana Amazon Warriors are the West Indian representative in the tournament that they host. The CPL 2024 finalists will be looking to dominate the competition on home soil and they have been able to name a pretty strong squad with the likes of Moeen Ali, Shai Hope, Shimron Hetmyer and Romario Shepherd among those in their ranks. They have also added players like Roston Chase and knowing the conditions well they are probably worthy 13/8 favourites.
The Lahore Qalandars finished bottom of the Pakistan Super League this season so they will be hoping to go a whole lot better in this competition. They are going to look a lot different to the squad that they had for that season with their captain Shaheen Shah Afridi missing while the likes of Shai Hope, Dan Lawrence, Sam Billings, Rassie van der Dussen and David Wiese among a while host of players who aren’t here either. They are 5/2 second favourites but that looks a little short it has to be said.

Hampshire also failed to make it through to the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast this season. They are 10/3 to win this competition. Their record in England is as good as anything in the county circuit but they are going to be without some big players here with their opening pair of Ben McDermott and captain James Vince both missing while John Turner isn’t available as he has been with England. They have added Shan Masood, Danny Briggs and Sonny Baker to their ranks though which should have them competitive.
The Rangpur Riders topped the table in the Bangladesh Premier League this season but they were unable to convert that into a Championship title so they will be looking to make up for that here. They are missing a whole bunch of players too, particularly with the bat and you wonder if the additions that they have made will allow them to be competitive with the bat. If they are then in these conditions their bowlers shouldn’t be out of touch but that batting does look a concern.
Victoria are the other team in the competition and they are 10/1 to win it outright. I suspect some of that is because Victoria don’t play in a T20 tournament back home and with the Big Bash not a million miles away and Australia involved in a huge Test series this is very much a made up squad which is travelling to this tournament. They have a couple of players who if they come off could have them competitive but man for man they look the weakest team in the event and making the final would be a massive achievement.
Betting
This isn’t an outright market which screams value I have to say but then again there aren’t many five horse fields that do. Pretty much every team in this competition are missing big players from the squad which played for them in their domestic tournament and that muddies the betting waters even further but you would have to think that will only maximise the home advantage that the Guyana Amazon Warriors have at their disposal.
The Amazon Warriors will know the wickets very well and while that might not be as much of an advantage later in the piece when everyone has had games on them but initially it will help and that should benefit them in making the final at the very least. They still have players who can get the ball out of the park even with the batters they are missing and the longer the event goes on and the pitches tire they have a spin threat which can be very dangerous so even at 13/8 they look the likeliest winners.
