Africa Cup of Nations 2021 – Monday 17th January Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The first group concludes in the Africa Cup of Nations on Monday when Group A plays out its final matches on a day where some teams are going to be happy at the end of it and others will be making their way home.

This has actually been one of the more entertaining groups of the tournament so far, helped by the fact that the home nation are in it and they have come and had a go, so hopefully we’ll get two good games to finish the section with.

Where to watch

These matches can be viewed on the Sky Sports Main Event, Sky Sports Premier League and the Sky Sports Football channels in full.

Burkina Faso vs Ethiopia (16.00)

One of the two matches on show on Monday afternoon sees a Burkina Faso side who are in good position to qualify looking to complete the job against an Ethiopia team for whom nothing has gone right so far and who need a minor miracle to make it through to the knockout stage.

From the moment they went down to 10 men early in their opening match things have transpired against Ethiopia. They lost that game then took on Cameroon at their own game and while they created plenty they were put to the sword. Burkina Faso have gone down the other route. They have been tight and unadventurous with the only goals they have conceded coming in a crazy five minutes where they handed Cameroon a couple of penalties. I’m not sure Burkina Faso have it in them to be expansive and while the plight of Ethiopia could leave them exposed once again I’m not convinced Burkina Faso will be too interested in taking advantage when a draw will see them through.

Cameroon vs Cape Verde (16.00)

The better of the two matches might well be the one which features the tournament hosts Cameroon. They are already through to the knockout stage but take on a Cape Verde side who need to get something out of this match if they are to join them.

I don’t think this will be a game where both kick it around for a draw. There is a clear sign of attacking intent in this Cameroon side and while some key men might well be rested for this one, those on the bench who get their chance to shine know they will need to perform in order to stake a claim for a place in the knockout stages. Cape Verde could technically qualify with a draw but they are going to have to improve defensively to get that and even then with Ghana and Algeria only on one point and likely to improve, four points isn’t a shoo in to get through. That makes me think Cape Verde might try and be heroes here and look to win the game. Even if they don’t, if they sit back and play for a draw they could be asking for trouble against this powerful Cameroon side. However it pans out I’m happy to take a wager on over 2 goals as if Cameroon do score and force Cape Verde to go for it all sorts of fun and games could ensue.
