The first round of the Western & Southern Open continues on Monday when another bunch of matches get played with all the attention now very much on Cincinnati and the latest Masters 1000 event of the season.
We saw some good action on the opening day on Sunday and with the defending champion, Grand Slam winners and finalists and rising stars all on the schedule on Monday we should see plenty more great tennis.
Center Court
There are just the two men’s matches on the Center Court on Monday. The first of them rounds off the day session after two women’s games have taken place. When the men do come along it will be the defending champion Borna Coric getting his title defence underway when he goes up against Sebastian Korda in a huge contest. The other match in the men’s draw comes along in the night session opener as Alexander Zverev takes on Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the second round in what is a real juicy matchup.
Grandstand
Three matches from the ATP event take place on the Grandstand court on Monday including the opening game games. The first is a real standout tie as Matteo Berrettini goes up against Felix Auger-Aliassime with the Canadian desperate to find some form ahead of New York. When they are done the home wildcard John Isner will be on court. He will go up against the qualifier Jordan Thompson, who has been in decent touch recently. We have to wait until the second match of the night session for the last men’s match to come along but there is British interest when it does as Dan Evans goes up against Lorenzo Musetti.

Outside Courts
There is also men’s action over on Court 3 and Court 4 for those who are on the grounds on Monday or watching on the streams. Nicolas Jarry has the honour of opening the show on Court 3 when he meets Roman Safiullin before the Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka looks to make full use of his wildcard when he takes on the American player Brandon Nakashima. The last men’s match on this court sees Lorenzo Sonego facing the qualifier Alexander Shevchenko while over on Court 4 Emil Ruusuvuori starts play against Corentin Moutet before Francisco Cerundolo meets Dusan Lajovic who came through qualifying over the weekend.
Betting
I’ll play one on Monday and it comes in the night session clash between Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov where I like the German to get the better of his man. Both men have won the title here in the past but the courts have changed since Dimitrov won as this event looks to be the perfect preparation for the US Open. They are faster and the bounce is much higher and that very much suits Zverev, who won the title on his last appearance in this tournament.
Dimitrov comes into this tournament having pulled out of Toronto last week citing a back problem so the last thing he needs is to be facing someone of Zverev’s power on a court where he is going to need to reach up to get most of his shots back. Zverev leads the head-to-head between these two 4-1 having won the last four, including at the French Open this year when he dispatched the Bulgarian for the loss of just eight games. I expect Zverev to move through here and put that horrible loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina last week behind him.
