Everyone has played their first match in the ATP World Tour Finals now and on Tuesday those who featured on Sunday are back on the court for their second match of the three they are guaranteed, each looking to either consolidate, bolster or protect their position heading into the final match of the group on Thursday.
The tournament has been largely one sided so far and it will be interesting to see if that changes at any stage on Tuesday with the winners from Sunday facing each other and the losers doing likewise.
Afternoon Session
Doubles – Jamie Murray & Bruno Soares vs Bob Bryan & Mike Bryan
Both pairings won their opening match in straight sets on Sunday so both of them go into this one knowing if they win they will be through. Let us be honest about it, these two are arguably the two best pairs in the competition and if both play to their best this should be a classic. I was actually at the o2 last year when Murray and his then partner John Peers played the Bryans and it was an epic contest.
It is take your pick in this one in my eyes. If forced I’d pick the Murray/Soares combination but it wouldn’t be with a lot of confidence so I would rather sit this one out.
Singles – Gael Monfils vs Dominic Thiem
We’ve got the walking wounded against the shattered looking youngster in this match as Gael Monfils takes on Dominic Thiem. There’s no way Monfils is fully fit. He admitted as much himself after his tame defeat to Milos Raonic on Sunday night while Thiem admitted he ran out of gas after winning the first set against Novak Djokovic.
The fact Thiem has played Djokovic and taken a set off of him could be significant here. He maintains every chance of going through whereas Monfils is as good as out already with him needing to win this one and then beat a Djokovic he seemingly can’t beat. That extra motivation coupled with a fitness edge leads me to Thiem in this one.
Evening Session
Doubles – Marcelo Melo & Ivan Dodig vs Trent Huey & Max Mirnyi
With both suffering straight set defeats in their opening match it is do or die for these two on Tuesday evening. I have to say I didn’t see much to encourage a bet in either pairing on Sunday so I’ll gladly sit this one out and wait for better chances to make some cash in the doubles.
Singles – Novak Djokovic vs Milos Raonic
Seven times Milos Raonic has tried to beat Novak Djokovic and seven times he has failed. In that time he has only won one set too so this is a tough ask for the Canadian even were he to be fully fit which he clearly isn’t. Much was made about Djokovic on Sunday but he wasn’t as bad as he was made out to be.
This tournament has been one for the favourites so far and I fancy that could continue here. Djokovic clearly reads Raonic’s serve very well and having been inside the o2 on Monday evening myself I can confirm the court isn’t as quick as it was expected to be which will further help the Serbian star. I expect him to win this and cover a 3.5 game handicap in the process.
