Big Bash League 2016-17 – Sydney Sixers vs Hobart Hurricanes Betting Preview

The last day of action in the Big Bash League before Christmas is a double header which begins at the Sydney Cricket Ground as the Sydney Sixers host the Hobart Hurricanes in the fourth match of the season.

This will be the second match of the campaign for the Sixers after they triumphed in the Sydney Smash on the opening day. The Hurricanes play their first match of the season here and will be hoping to head into Christmas with a win.

Sydney Sixers

It was a really good opening performance from the Sydney Sixers against the defending champions and they will be looking for a repeat of that here. Apart from a couple of overs with the ball they looked good in the field and then were in cruise control with the bat against a pretty smart looking Thunder attack.

One of the positives to come out of that match apart from the fact they won it was that Brad Haddin and Sam Billings never made it to the crease so there should be plenty more to come from the men in Magenta and that could be a worry for the other teams in the tournament. After a good work out their bowlers should be even better here too.

Hobart Hurricanes

The Hurricanes will be looking to put the disappointment of last season behind them but already there is a bit of focus on them after their decision to trade away Ben Dunk. His innings for Adelaide the other night has meant that whoever replaces him in the side will have big shoes to fill in a batting line up which looks quite light anyway.

To make up for that lack of depth with the bat the Hurricanes look to have some good bowling options. Stuart Broad, Shaun Tait and Cameron Boyce all have international experience and every now and again Dan Christian does something useful with the ball too but all of those will need to hit the ground running.

Team News

The Sixers have made one change to their 13 man squad which is to bring in Harry Conway in place of Henry Thornton but it would be a surprise if the same 11 don’t take the field. Jordan Silk was unlucky to miss out in the opener and could come in if the Sixers was an extra batsman.

Stuart Broad may have been a late arrival after his efforts for England in India but he has been named in the squad and all the talk is that he will start here. D’Arcy Short appears to be the man given Ben Dunk’s job alongside Tim Paine at the top of the order.

Betting

This is a match between the two worst sides in the league last season and when we write the review of this one I don’t think much will have changed in that regard but someone has to win and that someone should be the Sydney Sixers. They look the more settled of the two and have had a game to get into their groove. They are plenty short enough though so at those prices in this format as ever I’ll just let them win.

One bet I nearly took in their first game was for the Sixers to hit the most sixes but I was put up by what Andre Russell could do. As it turns out I was wrong and they did hit the most sixes and I fancy they might do similar here too.

They belted six sixes in the derby without Haddin or Billings getting to the crease but more importantly they were hard to get away with the ball until Pat Cummins came in and he has since smoked a load more sixes so there is nothing wrong with that.

Hobart don’t really have many six hitters aside from George Bailey and Dan Christian but in the middle order they are likely to be facing the Sixers’ spin twins who are never easy to hit. The Sixers bat deeper and can hit with freedom earlier and I think they’ll hit the most sixes here.
