The second match of the Big Bash League double header on New Year’s Day is the first Melbourne derby of the season as the Melbourne Stars play host to the Melbourne Renegades with local bragging rights on the line.
The Stars won their last match to get off the mark for the season while the Renegades suffered their only defeat of the campaign thus far in their previous outing so both teams will be eager to get a win under their belt here.
Melbourne Stars
A much better batting performance than had gone before got the Melbourne Stars up and running for the season in the previous match and they will be hoping that they can build on that with the willow and achieve back-to-back victories and make a significant move up the table. Victory here will move them into the large group on two wins for the season.
If the Stars can put up a solid batting effort then there is every chance of them winning this match because they have a very strong bowling attack with their spin twins of Adam Zampa and Sandeep Lamichhane and a decent enough seam core. Running hard between the wickets will be a big thing at the huge MCG.
Melbourne Renegades
For the first time in the tournament the concerns many had over the batting line up of the Melbourne Renegades came to fruition when they were restricted to less than 100 by the Sydney Sixers. They need to ensure that is not a trend that continues too often throughout the campaign if they are to achieve their goal of making the finals.
Much like a few sides in the competition, the Renegades look to have most if not all the bases covered with the ball so they only need to put up slightly above average scores to have every chance of winning matches. If they win here they will move to within two points of the leaders Hobart Hurricanes and in a nice position to pounce later in the season.
Team News
Melbourne Stars will be without their hero of the previous match as Peter Handscomb is back with the Australia squad. Jackson Coleman has been left out too so Seb Gotch and Jonathan Merlo come into the reckoning.
Melbourne Renegades have added bowlers Andrew Fekete and Jon Holland to their squad for the derby with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tim Ludeman the two men who make way. Will Sutherland is still away with Australia under-19s.

Betting
I’m expecting a low scoring match here. Melbourne Renegades are probably going to be a little nervy with the bat after their pathetic showing last time out while the Melbourne Stars are missing the only man who has scored any runs for them in the competition so far, which doesn’t exactly point to this being a run fest.
Both bowling attacks are decent enough and I’m guessing with the weather that’s been around Melbourne in the lead up to this match that the wicket isn’t exactly going to be a sparkling one here. We know how hard the boundaries are to hit on this ground so I’m far from convinced this will be a match which contains more than 300.5 runs.
