Big Bash League 2018-19 – Perth Scorchers vs Melbourne Renegades Betting Preview

There is one Big Bash League match on Monday and it comes from the Optus Stadium as the Perth Scorchers host the Melbourne Renegades in one of the bigger matches of the season so far, given the state of the current standings.

The Scorchers need to win their remaining four matches and then pray other results go their way if they are going to make it into the semi-finals. Melbourne Renegades sit in fourth place but having played more than those below them they could be sitting ducks if they lose.

Perth Scorchers

It had looked like the Perth Scorchers were just negotiating their way into a position from which to pounce and make it into the top come the end of the campaign, but successive defeats in their last two matches have made that look extremely difficult now. If there is a positive from that, they at least know their task from here on in. They must win every match left this season.

The surprising thing in recent times has been that their bowling attack has gone around the park. In their glory years it has been their bowling depth and quality that has been their strength, but they have conceded more than 175 in their last three matches, and that is a trend that will need to end if they are going to progress beyond the regular season.

Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades have hit a patch of inconsistency at a bad time. They are currently on a win-loss-win-loss run which has lasted five matches and if that is going to continue then they are due to lose this game which is less than ideal. Generally when they have batted well they have won in recent times but when they have been restricted to less than 150 they haven’t been quite so successful.

Although Melbourne are in a decent enough position, they need to take stock of where they are and ensure that they deliver four strong performances to conclude their campaign with. Should they do that, they would have every chance of getting the two wins they need to book a spot in the semi-finals. If they can find three wins they may even host that last four clash.

Team News

Perth Scorchers have named an unchanged squad from the previous match despite being beaten in it. I understand that as all they need to do is bowl better here. Jhye Richardson misses out once again as he is with Australia.

Melbourne Renegades have made one alteration to their squad with Joe Mennie coming in for Jon Holland. That is a bit of a surprise given the way the Perth wicket has played. Aaron Finch is still around which is very much a positive for them.

Betting

While I accept that both bowling attacks are better than what they have been showing in recent times, I can’t help but think that the sixes line is a little on the low side here at 10.5. Perth have suddenly come alive with the bat even if that has been to the detriment of their bowlers, while the Renegades certainly don’t lack in the big hitting department.

We have the likes of Aaron Finch, Cameron White, Cameron Bancroft, Dan Christian, Shaun Marsh, Ashton Turner and others clubbing for us on a ground where we’ve seen in the last two outings, sixes are perfectly attainable. We have had 17 and 18 sixes in the last two matches here and so despite the bowlers on show I’m happy to back over 10.5 in this one.
