One team will enhance their chances of reaching the finals of the Big Bash League and the other will severely dent theirs in the second part of the double header on Friday when the Brisbane Heat take on the Hobart Hurricanes.
These two teams begin the day as the two teams immediately outside of the top five but a place in that coveted zone could be the reward for the winner come the end of this one so there is a lot to play for in this match.
Brisbane Heat
Just when the obituaries were being written on the Big Bash League season of the Brisbane Heat, they have given themselves signs of hope with successive victories and another one here will have them just a point behind two teams in the top five and in the top five themselves if Adelaide have lost in the earlier part of the day. Defeat could leave the Heat needing a lot of results to go their way to make it through to the latter stages.
Brisbane came from nowhere to beat the Melbourne Stars in their last match and the confidence they should take from that should see them perform even better here. Matthew Renshaw was the hero on that occasion and if there is a criticism of the Heat it is that their batting haven’t put in a complete performance as a unit. Individual efforts have got them over the line but that can only happen for so long.
Hobart Hurricanes
The Hobart Hurricanes were on a roll but that came to a shuddering halt last time out when they were beaten to take their ledger to 5-6 for the year. That loss was away to the Perth Scorchers though so I don’t think we should hold that against them. They will know they have a double header with the Heat and a home game with the Sixers to come and if they can find a pair of wins they could make it through. If they win all three they will be in the latter stages.
Hobart are another team who are batting as individuals rather than a unit but you would imagine that they will get it together as one soon. There is so much talent in that batting unit it is hard to believe that won’t happen. Their bowling has been decent enough of late but it had no answer to the Perth Scorchers last time out. To be fair to them, not many attacks have had. Hobart will want their bowlers back on the wheel in this match.

Key Players
Matt Renshaw impressed with the bat last time out but he also has the potential to go well with the ball as well. Hobart have plenty of lefties in their top order so the off spin of Renshaw could come in very handy at some point.
This ground isn’t big enough for Tim David and if he can play himself in and get a start then you would expect him to go big. Brisbane also have a couple of lefties placed in their batting unit so his spin bowling could be useful too.
Betting
We are at the stage of the competition now where some teams aren’t just looking at winning matches but when they are in control of the situation to try and win big to bandage up their net run rate. These two sides have poor net run rates so if they get into a position where they can win this match quickly I expect them to take it just to give themselves another possible route into the latter stages of the competition should they need it.
This is a pretty fast scoring ground anyway in terms of the outfield is quick and at least three sides of it are not the biggest and with two loaded batting units and the need to get that net run rate sorted out I think we’ll see both teams go out with the intention of scoring big. There are some good bowlers on show in this match but nothing that would really scare the opposition in terms of extreme pace or mystery so I think the batters can send us beyond 35.5 boundaries in this one.
