Big Bash League 2022-23 – Sydney Thunder vs Sydney Sixers Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match in the Big Bash League on Sunday and it comes from the Sydney Showground Stadium as the Sydney Thunder play host to the Sydney Sixers in what is the first derby of the campaign for the two teams.

These two sit in the top three heading into this match. The Sixers will move to the top of the table with a win while the Thunder will go up into second and put more ground between them and the chasing pack so this should be a competitive match.

Sydney Thunder

After an opening win which they followed up with three defeats, the Sydney Thunder head into the derby as one of the form teams in the league after they have won their last four matches. Unlike that opening victory, the four most recent wins have all been convincing and they look like a team who are heading into the right direction ahead of getting David Warner back for the match which follows this one.

The Thunder batting has been the key to those four wins. Their bowlers probably set up the first victory which actually fired their batting into life so this is a team which is going well as a collective even though they are having to navigate a nasty run of injuries which has already seen them having to change plans a couple of times. The Thunder look to have their style sorted and we can expect a very aggressive batting display from them.

Sydney Sixers

The Sydney Sixers put an end to a bit of a skid when they saw off the Melbourne Stars on Friday. I don’t think we can say that win was completely convincing because there are still concerns over how they are bowling, but the good thing is their batters have got them out of the mess. Overall though, after two defeats to start the season, the Sixers have won five of the six completed matches since and so they certainly aren’t in bad form.

While the bowlers haven’t been as reliable and in the form we are used to seeing from the Sixers, they have been resting and rotating their bowling resources because of the heavy schedule they are in the middle of. The Sixers get Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon back next week so they are going to get stronger so if they can win here and take the lead in the table they are going to be a tough nut to crack down the stretch.

Key Players

Alex Hales plays his final match in the Big Bash this season in this game and you would imagine the England international will be keen to sign off with another big performance. Hales was out for a duck in the previous game but made three 50s in four prior to that so he’s in decent form.

James Vince was the mainstay in the innings against the Melbourne Stars last time out and this is also his final match in the Big Bash this term so like Hales on the opposition team, the Hampshire captain will be looking to sign off with a win.

Betting

We haven’t seen a particularly high scoring match here at the Sydney Showground Stadium this season but that is just because of poor batting rather than anything with the wicket, however a trend of the competition in the last week or so is flat pitches and high scoring matches and I expect no different here. We wouldn’t actually need a high scoring game in order for a 311.5 run line to be covered and that is what I expect to happen.

Matches between these two are generally high scoring as the macho side of the two teams come out in the derby atmosphere and I think it is fair to say that both these teams are riding better with the bat than the ball right now, especially the Sixers who are mixing and matching their resources in a bid to keep everyone injury free. The last time the Thunder were here they shot 124/0 in a little over 12 overs and Sydney Sixers are in good form with the bat too so I like the over on the run line.
