The Sunday offering in the Big Bash League is a really juicy clash as the defending champions Brisbane Heat welcome the current table toppers and unbeaten Sydney Sixers to The Gabba for a high profile dust up.
Brisbane suffered their first defeat of the season last time out and they will be looking to get back to winning ways here while Sydney have won all three of their matches and victory here would have them nicely on their way to the finals once again.
Brisbane Heat
The Brisbane Heat looked like they were going along nicely having won their opening two matches without playing at their best. Therefore it was a bit of a surprise when they came unstuck so emphatically against the Perth Scorchers last time out. They are back on home soil here will be looking to get back to winning ways and make it three wins from four for their season which would send them into 2025 with a decent platform to build from.
This already looks like it is going to be a congested table so the Heat will know that there is a real premium on winning their home matches so this is a big game for them in that regard. They also have a negative run rate after that beating in Perth so they need to break away from any point logjam. The Heat were in good position in Perth but their death bowling let them down, especially in the last over, and they couldn’t recover with the bat. That is where they can improve here.
Sydney Sixers
The Sydney Sixers always take some beating in this competition and the early signs are that they are going to be tough to overcome this term too. Long term, there is a concern that this is a team which is aging together but this season, much like a fine wine, they look to be getting better with age and another win here would lay something of a marker down and put them to four out of four as they close out the 2024 leg of their campaign.
The Sixers don’t look anything overly special with the bat in that they don’t have someone famed for hitting sixes in bunches but they score well without taking risks and then turn the ball over to their bowling attack to get the job done for them. That attack went around the park early on in their win over the Melbourne Stars on Boxing Day so that is something for them to improve. If they can do that, there isn’t a lot else that looks wrong with this team.

Key Players
Spencer Johnson returned from injury to excellent effect in Perth on Boxing Day. He took four wickets but he bowled the penultimate over of the innings and the Scorchers got away from the Heat in the last one so it will be interesting to see if he has the last over here instead.
James Vince showed why the Sydney Sixers are so keen to have his services for as long as he can be around each season with a magical century which broke the back of the run chase last time out. He only has a few games left so the Sixers will be wanting more runs from him here.
Betting
This should be a cracking match. The repeat of the final from last year offers up the chance for some revenge for the Sydney Sixers and an opportunity for the Brisbane Heat to prove their dominance over the New South Wales outfit. I can’t call a winner here. These look like two very similar sides in that there is a question mark over both at the end of the innings with the ball but both teams know how to get the job done with the bat.
If I was forced to I would go with the Sydney Sixers but I’m only 50:50 here at best and the odds offer up no value either way so the bet I’ll go with is for there to be more than 39.5 boundaries. We have only had one match on this ground this season and that had a total into the 40s for boundaries. Brisbane just batted poorly in Perth but they got 15 boundaries on a big ground despite their top four all getting out for single figures. Sydney have enough batting depth to go after the bowling as well so this line, while probably looking right, can still be covered.
