Big Bash League 2024-25 – Hobart Hurricanes vs Adelaide Strikers Tips and Betting Preview

The Big Bash League season continues on Sunday when two sides who won their latest outing battle it out in Tasmania as the Hobart Hurricanes look to cement the top four standing when they host the Adelaide Strikers.

Hobart go into the match having won their last three matches and another win here would see them take up a strong position in the standings. Adelaide aren’t where they want to be but a win here would see them latch on to the top four spots.

Hobart Hurricanes

It looked like this could be a real mess of a campaign for the Hobart Hurricanes when they were battered out of sight in their opening match. That batting effort was nowhere near up to scratch and they could easily have suffered as a result. To their credit, they have bounced back with three wins and three pretty emphatic performances. Another of those here would have them looking in a very good position at the halfway point of their season.

There is no doubt that the Hurricanes have the potential to win this tournament with the bowling resources that they currently have. The question is whether their batting can use their brains enough to ensure that they get the job done often enough. The certainly don’t lack for firepower, as we have seen in the most recent three wins, but they don’t need any more showings like in the opener against the Melbourne Renegades where they got it all wrong.

Adelaide Strikers

The Adelaide Strikers have played two more matches than the Hobart Hurricanes and they are two points behind them so they will know that they really need to win this match because if they lose it and go 2-5 for their campaign it is hard to see how they reach the finals from there. They should be fine if they win out from here but they are likely to have to have to do that. The good thing is that they were in a similar position to this last year and they came good when it mattered and made it into the postseason.

The Strikers won their previous match when their bowlers came to the party probably for the first time in the competition. That unit really need to keep turning up for them because although they have a decent batting core, one which will be strengthened for a couple of games shortly, they can’t rely on that batting to deliver the goods every time, especially as there is a case to be made that they are a full batter light.

Key Players

Ben McDermott is averaging 53.50 for the competition even though he is batting further down the order than we are used to seeing him. His job here will be to get the Strikers’ spinners off their length and ensure his side have some freebies to feast on.

Henry Thornton is now just one wicket off the top of the bowling charts for the tournament and if he can get stuck into this Hobart Hurricanes top order and get those in the middle under a bit more pressure and not able to play their natural game it will certainly help.

Betting

When you consider that in the previous meeting between these two teams had both of them scoring more than 200, to have a run line of just 313.5 for this one feels a little strange. I fully expect that to be covered even though this match isn’t at the Adelaide Oval. To be fair, this line has yet to be covered on this ground in the tournament but that hasn’t all been down to the pitches. This will be just the second match here in 15 days so the pitch should play fine.

We know what to expect from these two teams. They are going to go hard with the bat and if the top orders come off then this could be a really high scoring game but we only need a couple of cameos from each team and a sensible innings somewhere along the line for this line to be covered. Four out of the six Adelaide games have covered this line and while only one of the Hobart Hurricanes matches have, they have had three of their four innings go beyond half of the runs we need here. The way these two play I expect the runs to flow in this one.
