The first of the three groups finishes in the Copa America on Saturday night when Group A draws to a close. It is a big night for three of the sides who can all still come out on top in the section but at the same time they can all finish third. At present that looks like being good enough to make it through but there are no guarantees as yet so the battle for the top two spots should contain a good deal of intensity.
The focus will be on the hosts Brazil, who have not yet impressed in this tournament and have one last chance to do so before the knockout stages begin, if they get that far. Peru and Venezuela are the other two teams looking to make progress on Saturday evening on what should be a decent night of football.
Brazil vs Peru
The bigger of the two matches overall is the one between the hosts Brazil and Peru, a match Brazil dare not lost else not only will they not win the group and make life more difficult for themselves but it could be that they only finish third in the section. Peru will win the group with a win here but they’ll qualify if they avoid defeat.
Brazil have laboured so far in this tournament but the time for that has well and truly disappeared. They need a performance, maybe not to qualify but to install belief that they can get the job done without Neymar, something that has been a big concern since he got injured. Peru delivered the goods against Bolivia in the previous match to set themselves up to qualify and with them all but into the next stage they can play with a bit of freedom and have a really good go at the hosts here.
Brazil haven’t conceded a goal in the tournament thus far but I fancy they might be a little more tested in this match but in saying that I’m not convinced the Peruvian defence is of the quality needed to contain them anyway so I think we’re going to see goals in this match. Peru have shown good intent going forward and with a bit of composure they could find the net. I like over 2.5 goals in this one.
Bolivia vs Venezuela
The other match on the final night in this group sees the two teams in the bottom two places going at it when Bolivia, needing a huge win here to have any chance of progressing, take on a Venezuela side who will be safely into the knockout stages with a win.
This has been a tournament to forget for Bolivia thus far. They look like they are out of their depth and have struggled in both matches, and but for their keeper things could have been even worse for them. It has been a strange tournament for Venezuela who seem to have set their stall up not to be beaten by Peru and Brazil safe in the knowledge that they have this match last. That puts a lot of pressure on them to make sure they win here but based on what we’ve seen from the pair to date you’ve got to think they are capable of that.
The longer this one goes and it is goalless the more the pressure comes on Venezuela but even when they score there is no massive value in them pushing out and looking to win by a landslide as any win will take them through to the knockout stage. Given that is the case, Venezuela to win by a single goal looks fair value to me.
