CPL 2017 – Barbados Tridents vs Trinbago Knight Riders Betting Preview

The regular season of the Caribbean Premier League is beginning to draw to a close with just two matches left before the play-offs begin. The first of those comes on Saturday night into the early hours of Sunday morning UK time when the Barbados Tridents host the Trinbago Knight Riders.

This is a massive match for the Barbados Tridents. They know they need to win their final two matches by huge margins to make the postseason. Trinbago will top the table regardless of what happens here.

Barbados Tridents

The former champions Barbados kept their hopes alive last time out when they demolished St Lucia Stars courtesy of a century from Dwayne Smith but Guyana’s win on Friday night has left the Tridents with an uphill battle to qualify for the play-offs. They face two of the top three and need to overturn a significant net run rate disadvantage.

In a way that could focus the minds of the Barbados side but then you have to wonder how their enthusiasm will be if things begin to go against them at any point. That said they may owe a couple of performances to their fans who they will be playing in front of which should keep them focused on the job at hand.

Trinbago Knight Riders

The Knight Riders head to Barbados knowing full well that they will top the table and with that they will get two bites at making the final when the play-offs begin next week. Although in theory they have nothing to play for here they will not want to go into the postseason off the back of a defeat so I expect them to be at it here.

They may not need to be too at it because they have been so dominant in the majority of their matches this season. They have combined brutal batting with solid and reliable bowling and as I repeatedly say that is usually a decent combination. If they maintain their intensity here they should be tough to beat.

Team News

It is hard to see Barbados making any changes for this match given their excellent performance last time out. They will want the same intensity with the bat to set up what they hope will be a big win.

Trinbago Knight Riders may decide that this is the time to rest a couple and make sure they are fresh for when the play-offs begin. They have a star studded squad so giving the fringe players game time would make sense.

Betting

It is hard to bet on the match outcome here because you would think Barbados are just going to swing at anything and everything. You would also be taking the motivation of Trinbago on trust as well which is never a good place to be in.

With that in mind and given the situation regarding the Tridents I think the obvious bet is to focus on the sixes where the line at 13.5 is a little on the low side. There were 22 sixes on this ground in the last match and I would suggest Trinbago are one of the most powerful sides in the competition so I expect that number to be threatened again. This line looks very low so I’m on the over.
