CPL 2018 – Jamaica Tallawahs vs St Lucia Stars Betting Preview

The Caribbean Premier League stops off in Jamaica for the first time on Tuesday night when the Jamaica Tallawahs host the St Lucia Stars in the first of just two matches in the tournament at Sabina Park this season.

Jamaica have played the one match in the tournament so far which they rode the back of an Andre Russell wave to come out on top while St Lucia have played twice to date and have been well beaten in both matches.

Jamaica Tallawahs

It was the proverbial game of two halves for the Jamaica Tallawahs in their one game so far against the Trinbago Knight Riders but the positive thing for them was that they won it and can now use their next two home matches to build up a strong position in the competition. They won’t always be able to ride the wave of an Andre Russell assault but when he does come good the chances are they will win the match.

One thing Jamaica will want to do much better over the next two nights, and indeed the remainder of the tournament, is bowl better. There was a lot of loose deliveries in their opening match which you can’t afford with the quality of batsmen in this competition. That said though in the main they have stacked their squad with batsmen so it is understandable to an extent.

St Lucia Stars

After an absolutely horrible first performance, if you can call it that, of the tournament, the St Lucia Stars found something with the bat at least in their second game although generally their best play came when the match had got beyond them. The scorecard suggests they lost to Guyana by three runs but in truth they were beaten much worse than that.

There are a couple of issues that the Stars need to address quickly. The first is that their seamers aren’t having much of an impact at the minute and the second one is that they have put in two sloppy batting performances which when you consider the talent they have, especially in their top four, is clearly not good enough.

Team News

Jamaica Tallawahs probably have no need to make any changes for this match unless someone is injured. I would imagine they will give their bowling attack another chance while their top order looks the best options they have.

After successive heavy defeats it might be time for the St Lucia Stars to change something. Mohammad Sami has so far returned six overs for 71 runs without a wicket. His place would look vulnerable with Darren Sammy waiting in the wings.

Betting

I think the Jamaica Tallawahs are the ones to be on here. St Lucia Stars might have made plenty of changes to their personnel but that doesn’t appear to have done much to their fortunes. We saw in their match against Guyana that St Lucia appear to have forgotten how to win. The best thing about Andre Russell’s blitz from a Jamaica point of view is that there is a whole load more to come from them with the bat and with the knowledge that he is in decent form their top order can play with freedom and be incredibly dangerous. I think everything equates to a home win here.

I also think that over 14.5 sixes is a good thing here too. The four matches on this ground last year had totals of 21, 23, 10 and 15 with the game featuring 10 having a second innings of just 116 which distorts the figures slightly. With only two matches being played at Sabina Park this season I’m expecting the wicket to be in tip top condition here and with the likes of Dre Russ, Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Rovman Powell, Johnson Charles, Dave Warner and Andre Fletcher all teeing off this line doesn’t look nearly high enough to me.
