CPL 2019 – Barbados Tridents vs Guyana Amazon Warriors Tips and Betting Preview

The last of the venues to see action in the Caribbean Premier League is the Kensington Oval and it hosts the tournament for the first time this season on Sunday evening when the Barbados Tridents take on the Guyana Amazon Warriors to get the party started on the island.

These two sides are both looking pretty good when it comes to making the play-offs in a couple of weeks time. Guyana have yet to lose this season while the Tridents have a couple of wins from four matches.

Barbados Tridents

The Barbados Tridents haven’t really been able to get anything going in this tournament but they picked up a big victory in St Lucia on Friday night and will be eyeing up a second straight victory here. If they get that then they will be looking at the sides above them and seeing how many of them they can finish ahead of and make their job a little easier come the play-offs. This is the first of five home games in quick succession so if they can get on a run it could be significant.

The Tridents were particularly eye catching in the field in St Lucia. They put together a couple of very good run outs and took some great catches to back up the efforts of their bowlers on a track which wasn’t really suited to bowling. That bodes well here given that they are on one of the best batting wickets in the Caribbean so they should go into this match with plenty of confidence inside them.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

Talking of teams who will be confident, the Guyana Amazon Warriors must be brimming with the stuff. That is because they have played five matches in the tournament to date and they have won them all, and in fairness they have looked a million dollars in the majority of them. They ooze power with the bat but they have a good mixture of brute force and cleverness for when the situation needs that and that is rare in this competition.

The other thing that has stood out with the Guyana Warriors has been the plans they have had with the ball. They have used their spinners at the right time and then their seamers have really only had to keep things on the straight and narrow. I’ve mentioned throughout the tournament so far that there seems to be an inner determination from everyone involved with Guyana to go one better than last season and it is showing in their displays.

Team News

Barbados Tridents have Alex Hales on their way back out to join them and while he should be back in the Caribbean for this match, whether they want to start him when he has just flown in remains to be seen. Shai Hope is understood to still be on the sidelines.

Guyana Amazon Warriors need to choose whether Romario Shepherd and Ben Laughlin have done enough to come into the game or not. One of them could be utilised with spin unlikely to have too much of an impact in this match.

Betting

I fancy we might see a low scoring match here even though the wicket is pretty good for batting on this ground generally. I say that because in their five matches so far the Guyana Amazon Warriors haven’t actually conceded more than 153 and their last three matches they have bowled sides out for 133, 121 and 137. This is a quality bowling attack and that has been done in a variety of different conditions.

Barbados Tridents aren’t the best batting side going around. They have looked a batsman light to me throughout the competition but slowly they are getting some good spin options mixed in with a seam attack that is starting to deliver the goods for them. Only once in the five matches here last season was the first innings score more than 151 and that was dead on 165 so there is enough to suggest the under is the play here.
