The Caribbean Premier League remains in St Kitts on Wednesday evening when the home side the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots are back in action a day after their stunning win over the Jamaica Tallawahs. They host the Barbados Tridents in another appealing looking contest.
The Patriots will be looking for successive wins in this match while the Tridents will be hoping for a first victory of the campaign in just their second outing in the competition, so there is plenty to play for in this one.
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
You have to give serious credit to the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots for their win on Tuesday night. Admittedly the fact they conceded 240 in the first place wasn’t ideal but fair’s fair to not only chase it down but to do it with an over to spare was a fantastic effort. There are plenty of sides out there who would have just looked to limit the damage on net run rate without even believing that chasing it was a possibility so fair play.
The clear concern for the Patriots is coming in the form of their bowling attack though. It has gone round the park in the last two outings and seemingly has no answer to power players with Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Gayle and Chadwick Walton all belting them to all parts. That has to improve if they are going to win the competition or they are going to need to get lucky with the tosses and continually chase to have a chance.
Barbados Tridents
We are still getting to know the Barbados Tridents in this tournament given that they have only played one match. To be fair to them for 15 overs of their bowling innings in their opener they were all over the Guyana Amazon Warriors but then they ran into the full force of Nicholas Pooran and their chances of winning after that were pretty slim. They’ll need to be wary of that happening again here but there were positives in the effort.
The ironic thing was I expected them to be better with the bat this season but their batting effort never really got started in that match. I’m prepared to give them that though because the pitch in Guyana isn’t as good as the others so I’ll judge their batting more on what it delivers here. On the face of it they should bat very well with the likes of Alex Hales, Johnson Charles and JP Duminy on show with Shai Hope to come back.
Team News
We often see teams who win not doing anything for the next game but there was no news as to why Sheldon Cottrell didn’t play but if he is fit then you would think he’ll come in for Dominic Drakes who got hit everywhere.
Barbados Tridents may make changes. It is not yet clear whether Shai Hope is fit to feature but it will be interesting to see if Sandeep Lamichhane plays after mysteriously only bowling one over in the first game.
Betting
We saw on Tuesday night that there is no playing the match market until we know the result of the toss because when 240 isn’t getting defended on the track you wonder what score can be. I’d side with Barbados given that St Kitts are backing up a performance but it is the side markets which interest me more here.
I have to say I’m amazed we are still getting a 16.5 sixes line here. We saw 37 sixes here on Tuesday night with 21 sixes from Jamaica and 16 from St Kitts and Nevis and while there is no Chris Gayle and Andre Russell here we do still have Alex Hales and Johnson Charles who are clean hitters of a cricket ball along with a few others in this Barbados team. Warner Park is a tiny ground, especially straight, and there is no real mystery to either bowling attack so you would have to think that while we might not get to 37 maximums we are going to go beyond 16.5 once again.
I’ll have another go with Fabian Allen to be the top St Kitts and Nevis Patriots batsman. He clobbered 37 off just 15 balls here on Tuesday night to go along with a couple of other scores in the 30s in this tournament earlier in the piece. He had no chance of top scoring when he came in on Tuesday because of the brilliance of the top openers but should they depart early and he remains at number four, which on form is where he should bat, he would have a chance at 12/1. I’ll pay once again to see where we get with him.
