The second half of the Caribbean Premier League double header on Saturday sees the defending champions Barbados Tridents end their title defence when they go up against a Jamaica Tallawahs side who still have their sights set on third place entering the day.
Those hopes will disappear if the Zouks win earlier in the day, but assuming they lose then the Tallawahs can set up a shootout for third spot with the aforementioned St Lucia side if they win here. Whatever happens in this match the Tridents can’t progress to the next stage.
Jamaica Tallawahs
It hasn’t been a perfect campaign for the Jamaica Tallawahs by any stretch of the imagination but they have done enough to make it into the final four and they have two matches to further find their best side and to find some form ahead of that semi-final. The way the Trinbago Knight Riders are going it might be a decent idea for them to try to finish third and avoid them in the last four so they should naturally be looking to win this game.
If the Tallawahs are going to find some form then they need to organise their batting a lot better than they have done. They’ve had a few days off to take stock of where they are as a side and now they should be getting their key players in the best batting positions. In an ideal world they will find someone who can open alongside Glenn Phillips but that is largely irrelevant if the likes of Andre Russell, Asif Ali and Carlos Brathwaite get utilised correctly.
Barbados Tridents
There is no getting away from the fact this has been a dreadful season for the Barbados Tridents and it ends here. You’d like to think a side would be getting better at this stage of a campaign and learning from their mistakes but this lot are actually getting worse and to be fair to them that took some doing. They just don’t seem able to work out how to bat on these wickets and as a result they will be watching on when the knockout stages come along.
The Barbados batting has been absolutely dreadful in recent times. Their last three scores have been 89/7, 92 and 89/9 so they haven’t given themselves a chance to win. It is fair enough that certain players have been out of form but as a collective unit to fail to post 100 three innings in a row is pitiful and they’ve got what they deserve each time. You’d like to think they will free up and have a go here but I’m not convinced that is going to get them anywhere anyway.

Key Men
We’ve been saying it for a while but Glenn Phillips is key to this Jamaica Tallawahs side. He is the one player who has used his head and made sure he gets himself in and builds a score before exploding late on and getting something competitive for his side.
You have to look to the captain when a team is struggling as much as the Barbados Tridents are and Jason Holder needs a big match here for his own position as much as anything else. Heads are going to roll when the season is done and if he plays well here he’ll have something to hold onto.
Betting
Neither of these sides are performing how they can with the bat and both certainly have their issues scoring against spin so it would be foolish to expect the highest scoring match of the season here. In fact I’m not expecting many runs at all. Both teams have the capabilities of filling their team with spinners on a wicket which will be being used for the second time in the day and strangling the batsmen that way. These teams are poor at rotating the strike and with the exception of Glenn Phillips there isn’t anyone who is in the greatest of form. That all leads to there being less than 287.5 runs in this match.
I’ll have a little dabble on Mitchell Santner to be the leading Barbados Tridents batsman in this match. Those who follow us on Twitter will know we had a small bet on him to top score in the previous game and this is a good chance to take him again. He tied the top score in that match but in the last two innings he has looked the only Barbados player who is prepared to knuckle down, find a way to score and then be expansive when he has built a platform. With a decent bowling attack for Jamaica there is every chance of more struggles with the bat for Barbados so at 20/1 Santner could give us a run for our money once again.
