CPL 2021 – Saint Lucia Kings vs Jamaica Tallawahs Tips and Betting Preview

It seems as though every match in the Caribbean Premier League season is important at the minute and that is certainly the case with the second part of the Thursday double header in the CPL 2021 campaign which sees the Saint Lucia Kings taking on the Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Kings go into the match in third place in the table and could actually move to the top of the pile with a win here. The Tallawahs are a place out of the top four and need to win here to get into that section ahead of the weekend sets of matches that round out the regular season.

Saint Lucia Kings

The Saint Lucia Kings head into this match off the back of a defeat on Wednesday evening and they will be kicking themselves for that. They looked to have the contest against the Guyana Amazon Warriors under complete control but then for whatever reason just couldn’t find the boundary and allowed the run rate to get out of hand. That ultimately found them out and they fell to a defeat in a match which for a large period it looked like they were in the box seat in.

They will need to hope there isn’t a hangover from that effort with the bat here. One of the mysteries of that innings was the fact that they changed their batting order after being so dominant in the previous match. The other thing that was a bit of a surprise was the way they used their bowlers. It was a very strange plan by the Kings in all honesty but it is a credit to the quality they have that they probably should have won the match.

Jamaica Tallawahs

Like most of the teams this season, the Jamaica Tallawahs have been very inconsistent this term. When they have been bad they have been absolutely terrible and although there have been moments when they have been good, I think it is fair to say that we haven’t seen the best of them yet. There is some real explosive power in this Jamaica side and in flashes we’ve seen elements of it but we haven’t seen it for a full 20 overs since their opening match. The good news for the Tallawahs is that was against the Kings.

Jamaica’s batting showed signs of life last time out although it has to be said the bowling strategy of the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots was questionable to say the least. Maybe of more importance was the way that the Tallawahs restricted a powerful Patriots side when they had the ball in their hand. They now have a decent performance to build on so now it is probably all about consistency. They are probably suited to playing in the evening when the ball comes onto the bat a little better.

Key Men

Faf du Plessis was out cheaply in the previous game and you got the impression that the team kind of lost impetus and control of the situation for just long enough to come out second best against the Amazon Warriors. He needs to get the innings off to a good start here.

Rovman Powell took hold of a decent platform that was laid by the Jamaica Tallawahs openers in the previous game and totally exploded to launch them up to a very sizeable total. Throw in the fact he can bowl if someone is going the distance and he’s a big player for the Tallawahs here.

Betting

There are question marks over both these sides either in terms of consistency with regards to the Jamaica Tallawahs or the performance on Wednesday evening of the Saint Lucia Kings. If I was betting on the match I’d probably take my chances on the Kings because they surely have to be motivated to deliver a strong performance here after the absolute shambles of a display they produced in the first meeting between these two sides. I think a better bet lies in the side markets though.

That comes in the form of the runs line which looks a little on the low side to me at 284.5. I don’t know whether that is an overreaction to the daytime match or not but we often see the matches are night are higher scoring ones. The last two night matches have had 325 and 285 with the latter being the match where the Kings hit one boundary in the last eight overs, which is almost unbeaten of in this tournament. Most of the matches in the evening are higher scoring and in truth we only need a first innings score of 142 for this line to have a chance of being covered so we’re not even looking for a massively high scoring game. I like the over here.
