CPL 2023 – Guyana Amazon Warriors vs St Lucia Kings Tips and Betting Preview

The Caribbean Premier League continues on Thursday night when the second CPL 2023 match in Guyana takes place as the Guyana Amazon Warriors play their latest match when they take on the St Lucia Kings.

The Amazon Warriors booked their spot in the top two at the end of the season with a win on Wednesday and this match offers up the chance for the Kings to secure a spot in the Eliminator so we should get a good contest to enjoy.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

With the exception of the first six overs of their home opener on Wednesday, the Guyana Amazon Warriors dominated the defending champions Jamaica Tallawahs in what was one of the most complete performances of the season so far. Once they got the run rate under control in that bowling innings there wasn’t really any doubt over the result of the game and that bodes well for them moving forward in the event.

There was also a feeling that there was more to come from the Amazon Warriors. Romario Shepherd would normally bowl at the death overs but he wasn’t available for that role and then Guyana got to their target with Shimron Hetmyer not needed at the crease so to beat the team who won the tournament last season with so much in hand will give the home side plenty of confidence. They just need to avoid complacency setting in now that they have qualified for the Qualifier 1 match.

St Lucia Kings

The St Lucia Kings are having a positive season but they do begin their time in Guyana off the back of successive defeats so they will just want to turn things around a touch. The latest of those losses was against the Trinbago Knight Riders which is an understandable loss but the one which preceded it against the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots would have been more of a concern. Despite those two losses, the Kings know they will finish third in the table as long as they win one of their last two matches.

St Lucia just need to get their bowling back on track. It might just be that a couple of special players have taken those matches away from them but at the same time it has coincided with the loss of their regular captain so they could do with a convincing performance just for their own confidence and belief. The positive is that even without Faf du Plessis their batting has held up in the main and so if their bowlers do sort it out they should be fine.

Key Players

Saim Ayub is in real good form and delivering everything expected of him as an overseas player. He has three consecutive 50s going into this match and while they haven’t always been the quickest scoring, Guyana have plenty of speed merchants to catch up at the other end.

Roston Chase continues to deliver with the ball in this tournament but even when he scores runs with the bat there is an element of him stalling the innings so he needs to find a way to be more impactful with the willow.

Betting

I expected the pitch to play well at Providence on Wednesday night and when Brandon King was timing it to all parts batting looked easy but the longer the match went on it got a whole lot more difficult, especially against the spin, so I’m inclined to think that batting might be quite tough here. Both these sides can bowl a huge number of spin, indeed St Lucia can bowl all 20 overs of it if they so wish, so that isn’t going to make run scoring any easier, particularly with the boundaries bigger than usual here.

The run line has crept up a little to 322.5 runs for this one which means a base score of 160 which Jamaica never looked like getting on Wednesday night. There isn’t look to be another pitch available so I’m guessing this match will be on the same wicket which will have dried up a bit more and this just feels like a low scoring match to me. Even Ayub had to be quite watchful before growing in confidence on Wednesday so this looks like one of those pitches you are never quite in on so I’ll side with the bowlers and take the under on that line.
