We’ve made it to the final week of league matches in the CSA T20 Challenge and all six sides are in action on a busy Wednesday in the tournament in what is likely to be a pivotal day in the race for the playoffs and top spot.
Going into Wednesday’s matches we know the Knights are out of the tournament but the race for top spot and for third place is perfectly poised. We have a TV game on Wednesday and two matches away from the cameras. We’ll begin with the TV match.
Titans vs Highveld Lions
The leaders Titans take on the third placed Highveld Lions in the match of the day and these two sides head into the game in very different places. The Titans have lost their last two matches while the Highveld Lions have finally caught fire and are pushing hard for the playoffs.
The concern for the Titans is that as the season has gone on they have started to weaken with the bat and that is putting plenty of pressure on their bowlers and in the last two matches they’ve not coped. They have relied on Ferhaan Behardien all season but someone else needs to stand up now.
The improvement in the Highveld Lions isn’t a surprise because they have Reeza Hendricks back now and he is quality at the top of the order. Another boost for them here is that they have Temba Bavuma back from international duty and with a bowling attack that rarely goes around the park I think the visitors are overpriced in a match which has a much closer feel to it than the odds suggest. Momentum is with the Lions as is my money.
Cape Cobras vs Knights
It has been a disappointing season overall for the Cobras but they managed to chase down a significant total against the Dolphins at the weekend to kick their campaign into life and if they are to make the playoffs this simply has to be a penalty kick for them.
The Knights are out of the tournament and can’t buy a decent performance. They have started resting their main players for the remainder of the campaign so the Cobras should win this but at 1/2 the price reflects that. They’re our outright pick so we’ll let them win rather than go in large on a short price.
Warriors vs Dolphins
The second placed Warriors host the fourth placed Dolphins in East London in a huge match for both sides. The Dolphins have played an extra match to those around them so defeat here will all but end their chances of making the playoffs but the Warriors need to win to keep up the heat on the Titans at the top. A win would take them top if the Titans lose the main game.
Both sides go into this match off the back of disappointing defeats but the problem for the Dolphins were they probably can’t bat better than they did in the Cape Cobras match and they still lost it. The Warriors are nicely balanced with the bat and they have in Andrew Birch arguably the best bowler in the tournament.
Dolphins have individual match winners with the bat but the better team looks to be the Warriors and I’m with them to get back to winning ways in this one.
