Euro2016 – Top Goalscorer Betting Preview

One of the most popular markets to attack going into any global tournament is the top goalscorer one so we’ll get stuck into the respective market for Euro 2016. Some of the better attacking players in the world game are on show in France over the next month which makes this a competitive market.

Recent Top Goalscorers

2012 – 6 players tied on 3 goals

2008 – David Villa (4 goals)

2004 – Milan Baros (5 goals)

2000 – Patrick Kluivert & Savo Milosevic (5 goals)

1996 – Alan Shearer (5 goals)

Market Leaders

Cristiano Ronaldo is the 17/2 favourite to score the most goals in this tournament and in truth there isn’t a lot not to like about him from a goalscoring point of view. Ronaldo was part of the six way tie with the most goals four years ago and has only got better since then. He’s a very worthy favourite.

Thomas Muller knows how to score goals in tournament play. He is probably Germany’s most reliable scoring option at the minute and he will be popular at 9/1 particularly with Germany tipped to go deep in the competition.

Antoine Griezmann had one of the best seasons of his career with Atletico Madrid in the campaign just gone and will have plenty of attention on him as the hosts look to win the title on home soil. Whether he’s the man to deliver the goals or provide them remains to be seen but if you think it is the former then he is the 11/1 third favourite.

Griezmann’s French teammate Olivier Giroud is the next player in the betting around the 14/1 mark. Giroud has been in good scoring form for his country in recent times which is a vast contrast to his club form. If France do go the distance he could be the one to lead the way.

England fans looking to get behind someone might be all over the Tottenham forward Harry Kane at 16/1. The England striker has been in excellent form for his club and was the leading scorer in the Premier League but he is still fairly new to this level and this is his first tournament so it will be interesting to see if he can hit the ground running.

Robert Lewandowski is the same price as Harry Kane and while he is one of Europe’s top marksmen for Bayern Munich whether this Poland side has the quality required to a) get him through to a part of the tournament which gives him enough time to score enough goals and b) set him up with enough chances remains to be seen. If he does get the chances we know he’ll take them.

It is 20/1 bar those named in the top goalscorer betting market in what is a highly competitive field especially with 66% of the sides going into the knockout stages in this event as opposed to the 50% of tournaments gone by.

Betting

This year I’m going to really attack this market but before I go through my picks I need to lay down some criteria so in an ideal world I’m looking for the main man in his team. If possible that player will be the penalty taker too to boost scoring potential and they will have a draw that takes them at least to the quarter final and if they have an open group then so much the better.

It should be pointed out that we’re not necessarily looking for a player from the team who goes on to win the tournament for the top goalscorer. Only David Villa in 2008 has been from the winning team as an outright tournament top scorer since the format was extended from eight teams for the first time in 1996.

Looking through the groups and without a doubt the best group to be in for me is Group F. One of the reasons for that is because Hungary are there and I suspect they will be the whipping boys in the tournament and the other reason is because whoever comes through that group has a winnable first knockout match so before you know it they could be in the quarter finals and alive and kicking.

As luck would have it the three players I think are the best value in this market all come from Group F. That isn’t intentional I can assure readers but I’m certainly not going to complete at the prospect!

Main Bet

My first pick is Cristiano Ronaldo. Like him or hate him Ronaldo has every chance of top scoring in this tournament. In fact if you do hate him then get your wedge down and at least have a reason to be happy each time he scores in this tournament!

Ronaldo fits the bill for me. He is on penalties, he’ll even be on free kicks and he is in a team capable of going a long way in the tournament who will tee him up with plenty of chances. Sometimes backing the favourites is the easy way out but on this occasion the obvious bet looks very much the right bet and I’m not going to ignore it. I’ll get stuck into Ronaldo at this price. He should be a point or two shorter than this.

Outsiders

The Portuguese star is my main bet in this market but anyone who follows me will know I like to chase the value at some bigger prices and this is no exception to that rule. The first of the outsiders I’m going to back is the Austria centre forward Marc Janko.

Janko has been in good scoring form for Basel this season and you can’t argue at his international record where he is scoring at just under a goal every other game which over 54 caps is still a pretty decent record. He is the man that Austria look to.

Janko scored seven goals in qualifying which was bettered by just Robert Lewandowski, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thomas Muller of those competing at this tournament so that alone shows the sort of scoring potential he has. Anyone who has read my tournament preview will know I like the look of Austria to go deep and if they do Janko will have gone well.

My final pick is going to be a very long shot on a Premier League player and that is Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Tottenham man is a key cog in Iceland’s attacking play and perhaps most importantly of all he is their penalty taker which might snatch him an extra goal or two.

Sigurdsson bagged six goals in qualifying and if Iceland can take care of Hungary in fine style and snatch a goal in the other games he could have bagged three or four and that could be competitive in the overall picture.
