Euro 2020 Qualifying – Play-Off Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The field for the Euro 2020 tournament will be finalised on Thursday evening when the four Play-Off finals take place over the course of the continent for the last four spots in the tournament next summer, wherever it may be held.

The stakes are pretty high here. It is simply 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties if needed for a shot at the big boys in Euro 2020. With the seedings from the Nations League being used for these play-offs these finals look very tight.

Thursday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated)

Georgia vs North Macedonia (5pm)

Hungary vs Iceland

Northern Ireland vs Slovakia

Serbia vs Scotland

It is a big night for a couple of the Home Nations sides as Northern Ireland and Scotland look to book their spot in the finals. Northern Ireland host the side who beat the other part of Ireland in the semi-finals in Slovakia in a match they will feel they can win while Scotland have the toughest match of the two, certainly on paper from probably on the pitch as well as they head across Europe to take on a dangerous Serbia outfit.

In terms of seeds the lowest ranked match of the night sees a Georgia team who are suddenly offering up better form at the present time taking on a North Macedonia outfit who have always been dark horses to qualify for the main event after doing well in the Nations League. The other match on the evening is very interesting indeed as Hungary host an Iceland team who suddenly don’t look anywhere near as strong as they have over the last four years or so.

Betting

I’m expecting a lot of tight matches here and wouldn’t be surprised if all four of them need extra time and maybe even penalties purely because the stakes are so high and the prize is such a big one. One game where there could be an edge though comes in Belfast when even a small crowd of just over 1,000 can spur Northern Ireland on to qualify for their second European Championship in succession when they host Slovakia.

Northern Ireland are very tough to beat and although their recent Nations League results have been pathetic I’m not going to take too much notice of them because it has been clear from the start that their focus and attention has been on the qualifying matches for this and as a result I expect to see their best here. If we do I think they can see off Slovakia. In many ways these two are very similar but I just think Northern Ireland are better at what they do and more effective with it. If there is a winner in this match it can be them.
