Euro 2020 Qualifying – Thursday 5th September Matches Tips and Betting Preview

It is international week which means the next leg of qualifiers for Euro 2020 takes place over six days of what should be really competitive action as we head to the halfway stage of the groups and into the second half of them.

The action comes thick and fast for the next few days with the big guns spread across the week to ensure decent quality throughout. Spain and Italy provide the top quality on Thursday night while Republic of Ireland are also in action.

Group D

It is the Republic of Ireland that are in the bigger of the two matches in Group D in this round of matches. They have three wins and a draw from their opening four games in the group but still need something from their home match with Switzerland to stay out in front in the section. The other match sees Denmark looking to have a penalty kick of a win given that they travel to Gibraltar who remain largely out of their depth at this level.

Group F

We have three matches in Group F on Thursday night where Spain are the headline act. They will be expected to beat Romania but the home side don’t have a huge amount to lose and will look to take the game to the Spanish. The two Scandinavian sides face the minnows on Thursday evening as Norway play host to Malta while Sweden make the trip to take on a Faroe Islands who they should beat, but who they shouldn’t underestimate..

Group G

We have the one match popping up in Group G on Thursday night and it looks a routine one for the home side Israel. They will be looking for the three points when they play host to a North Macedonia side who have tailed off quite alarmingly since winning their opening match. Israel will know Poland look away and gone in the section so they are playing for second place and a win here is imperative for them if they are to maintain that.

Group J

There is an early kick off in this group on Thursday which sees the big guns in the group Italy in action. They make the lengthy trip to take on Armenia while elsewhere in the group Finland will look to continue their winning run when they take on a Greece side who lost to Armenia last time out. The other match in a compelling group sees Bosnia and Herzegovina hosting Liechtenstein in a match they need to win be winning.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the night with the first of them coming in Finland where I expect the improving home side to see off a Greece side who are nothing special and who lost to Armenia last time out. Their captain aside, no outfield player in their squad has more than three goals at international level which is surely a concern against a team who’ve won their last three in this group without conceding a single goal. Finland had a positive Nations League campaign and look to have built on that in their Euro 2020 qualifying effort. I expect them to win this match.

I’m also expecting Switzerland to have too much for Republic of Ireland but I’ll chase a little extra value in taking the Swiss to win to nil. They don’t have Xherdan Shaqiri for this match so if Ireland do score then I’m not convinced Switzerland will win anyway but given that the four Irish strikers named in the squad by Mick McCarthy don’t have an international goal between them I’m far from convinced that the home side will score here. In fact not one member of the entire squad who isn’t a defender has more than two goals at this level. England couldn’t score against Switzerland in the summer so why would Ireland be certain to? 0-0 is a danger I guess but at 2/1 I’ll take the chance Switzerland find a goal and therefore win to nil.
