Czech Republic vs Turkey
Czech Republic and Turkey know their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of Euro2016 are hanging by a thread. With one point and none respectively both know they simply have to win when they meet on Tuesday evening.
Czech Republic will move to four points which looks like being the number needed to make it through as the best third placed sides. A Turkey win will see them go to three points and then they will have to wait and see. This one is nicely set up.
The Czechs looked down and out midway through the second half of their match against Croatia in their previous match. Having been edged out by Spain in their first game they found themselves 2-0 down to Croatia and in danger of going out of the tournament before they had even offered anything but then everything changed and they came back to 2-2 to keep their hopes genuinely alive.
Defensively the Czechs held strong against the Spanish but suffered late heartache and they were even worse in that area against Croatia but this isn’t the match to defend. They need to take the bull by the horns and go after the win they need.
Key Man
Tomas Necid came off the bench and held his nerve to secure the Czechs a draw against Croatia and you would think that will have been enough to have earned him a starting berth here. If this gets late and the Czechs need a goal he could be the one they look to in order to fire them to victory.
Turkey have found the going tough in this tournament so far. They were torn apart by Spain in their previous game and if Croatia had taken all their chances in the first match then that would have got a little messy for the Turks as well. They have to improve in that area.
Not that this will be about defending. With a -4 goal difference and only two other groups likely to finish with the third placed side on less than four points they are going to have to raise that significantly. Not only do they have to win here but they need a two goal win to put them above Albania in the third placed race.
Key Man
The best player in this Turkish squad is Arda Turan and if ever they needed a big knock from him it is now. He is a huge star in Turkish football and he’ll probably be the best player on the pitch on paper. Now is the time for him to show that.
Team News
The Czechs will be without Tomas Rosicky now after he picked up a tournament ending injury against Croatia. Borek Dockal is struggling to be fit so Milan Skoda and Tomas Necid could come into the side from the start.
Fatih Terim is expected to make changes for this match. Former Liverpool player Nuri Sahin may well come into the starting line up and with a win needed this could be the time to unleash Emre Mor in the hope that he can open the Czechs up.
Head to Head
These two have met nine times since Czechoslovakia broke up and the Czech Republic were formed. The Czechs have won five of those matches with Turkey winning on three occasions. There has been a solitary draw between the two. None of the nine matches have had less than two goals in them so this could be a high scoring match.
Betting
These two sides will know each other fairly well as they were in the same group in qualifying for this tournament. Each side won their away match and lost at home so there probably isn’t much between these two teams.
I think we’re going to get a very open game here. Both sides have to go for it because it is must win for both teams so if there is an early goal here then all sorts of carnage could happen given the situation. Turkey of course don’t just have to win they have to win big so they will need to take plenty of risks and that should open the game right up.
We’ve seen that both have frailties defensively in this tournament and there is no reason why they won’t rear up again here so at a huge price I’m on over 2.5 goals in this one. It has landed in seven of their nine meetings with the other two games having exactly two goals. The chances of goals here are high.
