The weather continues to wreak havoc to the French Open tournament in Paris with only the held over women’s matches able to finish on another frustrating day for everyone involved in the event at Roland Garros on Tuesday.
Fortunately for the organisers the forecast looks a little bit better initially on Wednesday so hopefully the tournament will be able to get back to normal on what is scheduled to be a very busy second Wednesday of the competition.
Tuesday recap
There wasn’t much tennis on Tuesday but in the matches which were able to see some action there were two shocks in the women’s tournament when the number two and number six seeds Agnieszka Radwanska and Simona Halep were both knocked out of the tournament. They were beaten by Tsvetana Pironkova and Sam Stosur respectively.
That was it for the women’s action on Tuesday but there was some men’s action with Novak Djokovic surprisingly dropping the first set against Roberto Bautista-Agut but the world number one recovered to lead by a break in the third set with the match at 1-1 when the rain returned.
Elsewhere Dominic Thiem and Marcel Granollers are involved in a battle. Granollers stormed a tie-break to level that one at one set each when the heavens opened again while Ernests Gulbis is a break up early in the first set against David Goffin. David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych are on serve in their first set.
Wednesday – Men’s Matches
There are no new men’s matches on the schedule for Wednesday. We’ve already previewed the ones on the schedule and we’re pretty happy with our bets in them so we’re going to hope they all finish and hopefully bring home the goods by the end of play. Check out our day 9 and day 10 previews for those bets.
Wednesday – Women’s Matches
There are only two new women’s matches on the card going into Wednesday as the quarter finals of the tournament begin in earnest when Sam Stosur takes on Tsvetana Pironkova and Garbine Muguruza plays the surprise package of the tournament in Shelby Rogers.
In the second match I’ve got to favour the Spanish star to come through there but at 5.5 games I think the handicap is about right especially with both ladies having had a day off to recover and get ready for the match.
I’m not so sure the handicap is spot on in the other match though. Stosur has to cover a 3.5 game handicap but I think she’s good for that and possibly a bit more too. This looks like the Stosur who was at the top of the game a few years ago this week. She has already seen off Lucie Safarova and Simona Halep in fine style recently.
You’ve got to give Pironkova all the credit in the world for beating Radwanska in the previous round on Tuesday especially from a set down but I feel that match was stopped at the right time for the Bulgarian and listening to Radwanska’s press conference afterwards it would appear the Pole beat herself when the match resumed.
Stosur is pretty strong mentally from a battling hard point of view and I don’t see her making the mistake that Radwanska did. Stosur tends to take things in her stride but the way she is hitting the ball right now she has to be taken here. Straight sets should be enough for Stosur to cover but the longer it goes the better I expect her to get so even if she needs three sets we may still be fine.
