The penultimate match in the group phase of the Global Super League forms the opening leg of the double header of action in the tournament on Thursday as Hampshire look to keep their hopes alive when they take on Victoria in Guyana.
This is a day game and one with everything on the line. Victoria are into the final with a win while Hampshire could also reach the final if they win and the later game goes their way so we should be in for a cracking contest here.
Hampshire
This hasn’t been the tournament that Hampshire would have wanted at the outset. It looked like they were going to go better than expected when they escaped from the dead to see off the Rangpur Riders in their opening game but they haven’t been able to convert favourable positions in their next two outings and that has left their tournament hopes hanging by a thread. They have to win here to have any chance of making the final but they might well need a very big win.
Hampshire have bowled very well throughout this competition and they will need to do that again here if they are going to make it through to the final. This time though they will need their best batting effort. It might be worth sending in one of the all-rounders earlier in the innings to up the run rate if the top order fail once again. If that top order can come good though, Hampshire have the firepower down the innings to set up a big win.
Victoria
Victoria started this competition like a house on fire, even though they were huge outsiders before a ball was bowled in the tournament. They came unstuck in the second part of their batting innings in their latest match though which means that they still need to win this game in order to make it through to the final. They will know they were in control against the Lahore Qalandars before they fell apart in the space of five overs which will prove costly if they don’t win this match.
Victoria have been the only team in the competition who have got off to a decent start with the bat in the powerplay. They will be tested here but if they can get away from a Hampshire side who know that they have to win this match by a big margin they might force some mistakes out of the opposition. Victoria are in the better position of knowing that any win puts them into the final. They don’t need to worry about margins of victory or anything like that.

Key Players
You get the feeling if Hampshire are going to win this match by the margin that they need to then Liam Dawson is going to have to deliver not just with his four overs with the ball but also with the bat where he can get some clean hits away.
Blake Macdonald has got Victoria off to some good starts in the competition and the clean hitting opener will be assigned the task of leading the Australian outfit to the final by launching another innings into life.
Betting
This is a massive match in the competition and one which surely has to be higher scoring than those that have gone before. Both of these teams have spinners in their ranks but they are not mystery spinners so you would imagine that the batting units will cope well with the opposing attack better than they have any others in the competition. Victoria matches have in the main been higher scoring than the others and with Hampshire having to win by a decent margin I expect this to follow suit.
The run line for this match is 268.5 so even scores of 135 will get this covered and it is hard to believe that given what is on the line and the attacks that these two have that scores won’t get there. Of course, if the first innings goes well over 135 we won’t need anywhere near that number in the second innings. Both these teams bat pretty deep. Victoria have conceded 135 in all three matches and Hampshire have conceded it in two of their three. I like the over to land here.
