Glorious Goodwood 2019 – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting takes place down in Sussex on Wednesday, with the highlight of the day being the Sussex Stakes. There are some excellent races on the card and thanks to a winner and a place on the opening day of the festival on Tuesday, we are playing with the house money. With that in mind, we’ve picked out two bets to get stuck into on day 2 of the meeting.

2.25 Goodwood: Unibet Handicap

Preview

A maximum field of 14 line up for this ultra competitive 3 year old handicap over a mile and a half.

There’s no clear favourite with many in with chances but the one obvious thing is the number of runners who want to be up with the pace.  I can see them going off too quick in front and this may be set up for a closer.

Desert Icon is the one most likely to head the market and he won last time out but, whilst being an improving sort, he’s up 7lbs for a narrow win of a neck.  Durston has won his last 2 and likes to come from the back but he’s always likely to find trouble in running and I actually think he may need a bit further, especially on this sharp track.

Sir Ron Priestley has won 3 of his last 4 but he’s a prominent race and his wins have come in small fields whilst the defeat came in a big field where he went off too quick, whilst Eminence is firmly on the shortlist and rates a danger if not for his disappointing run last time out when turned over at odds on.

Betting

I’m drawn to the handicap debutant from the John Gosden yard in Koscuiszko.  He’s only seen the track 3 times, 2 of those as a 2 year old where he won his 2nd start convincingly.  He’s clearly had a few issues as his seasonal reappearance wasn’t until 3 weeks ago where he ran 2 lengths 5th to a horse now rated 95 where our selection gave the winner 7lbs.  Hypothetically speaking, and assuming the winner is worth his revised mark, our selection has 2 lengths to find but is 11lbs better off (as he’s rated 91 for his handicap debut).  He’s by Derby winner Australia so the extra 2 furlongs should suit but he clearly has the speed for shorter.  I expect Frankie will sit him off the pace in the hope the leaders come back to him.  He has a Group 2 Great Voltigeur entry so Johnny G clearly thinks highly of him and he wouldn’t be pitching him here if he felt he didn’t have a good shot at it.

Tips

Back Koscuiszko (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.50 Betfair BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)

3.35 Goodwood: Sussex Stakes

Preview

The big race is the Group 1 Sussex Stakes over a mile where a small field of 8 line up.

This is dominated by the 3 year olds where 3 who ran in the St James Palace at Royal Ascot head the market.   In that race at the Royal meeting, Circus Maximus beat Too Darn Hot and it’s these 2 that will go off 1st and 2nd favourite.

Too Darn Hot was the champion 2 year old but took time to get going this term.  However, he won well in France last time out in a Group 1 over 7 furlongs so looks a worthy favourite.  Circus Maximus was 6th in the Derby but, stepping back to a mile, won the St James Palace under an enterprising Ryan Moore ride.  The trip on this sharp track, however, might be too sharp.

Of the older horses, Lord Glitters who won the Queen Anne is the most likely but has to give 8lbs to 3 year olds so this leads me to side with the other fancied one of the younger brigade.

Betting

That horse is Irish 2000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain.  He was a good 2 year old but really put himself in the spotlight when easily landing the Irish Guineas beating Too Darn Hot by 3 lengths in the process.  He went from the front that day and might just attempt to do the same again in this.

His price looks massive but is almost certainly down to that Royal Ascot where, going off favourite, he disappointed by finishing 6th, over 3 lengths back.  He didn’t lead that day but the most offputting thing for me was the stable form.  Charlie Hills has his string in much better form now and I cannot see him out of the frame here.

Tips

Back Phoenix Of Spain (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 7.00 Boylesports BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)
