The first group in the Gold Cup tournament concludes on Sunday night on what may well be a high scoring evening of football out in Carolina as Mexico and Canada look to justify their seeding and make it into the knockout stage.
They are the favourites to progress but Martinique will hope to have the chance to upset the applecart, although by the time they feature in Charlotte their fate in the tournament could already be sealed near enough.
Canada vs Cuba (23.00)
The first match of the night will see Canada looking to put themselves in an unassailable position in the group when they take on a Cuba side who need snookers if they are to have any chance whatsoever of progressing.
A big win for Canada here will guarantee their progress but with Mexico widely expected to win the second match of the evening any sort of win for the Canadians is likely to do the job here. They might want to avoid Costa Rica in the next round though so running up the score would be in their best interests. Cuba came here full of hope of showcasing their talents on a stage such as this but they’ve been outclassed and you would have to think they are on for another tough night here.
The goal line in this match is five but I’m not convinced it is high enough. Canada scored four against Martinique and missed a whole bunch of chances. This group could yet come down to goal difference so they should want to run up the score here. Cuba gain nothing by sitting deep so if they come out this can go a bit wild. I’ll play the over.
Martinique vs Mexico (01.30)
The last match in this group will see Martinique taking on Mexico with both sides knowing what is needed to secure their aim. Mexico already know if they avoid defeat in this match they will win the group but I fancy they’ll be eyeing up more here. Martinique need to better Canada’s result to progress.
To be fair to Martinique they have looked alright going forward in this tournament and if they had someone of quality to put those chances away that they create regularly they could be a dangerous side at this level. Ultimately though they don’t really have that and they don’t have the defensive stability to keep sides like Mexico at bay either. As with the game above it makes no sense for Martinique to sit in and contain so I expect over 3.75 goals to have no problem in landing.
