We head back into Group B in the Gold Cup on Thursday night as the action moves on to Dallas for the second round of games in this section. Haiti and Costa Rica have assumed early control of this group and will be looking to make it safely through to the knockout stages here.
Nicaragua and Bermuda offered fleeting signs of something bordering competitive in their first matches and go into this one knowing that they need a result of some kind in order to keep their qualifying hopes alive heading into the last set of fixtures.
Nicaragua vs Haiti (00.00)
The more competitive of the two matches on Thursday night is likely to be the first one when Nicaragua look to put their shellacking from Costa Rica behind them when they take on a Haiti side who rode their luck but came out on top against Bermuda in their first game.
I expected Nicaragua to be quite toothless in their opening match and they never disappointed that prediction. Haiti worried me defensively initially against Bermuda but to be fair to them when Derrick Etienne Jr came on the pitch they looked a very dangerous side and if he starts here you’ve got to think the Haitians will pick up the win they need to secure their qualification. I’m a little concerned about them defensively but I don’t see Nicaragua troubling them too much. Although Nicaragua were walloped in their opening game three of Costa Rica’s goals had bizarre elements to them. Haiti shouldn’t be as tough to contain so I’ll take Haiti to win but under 4.5 goals in the game.
Costa Rica vs Bermuda (02.30)
The more entertaining match of the two on Thursday evening is likely to come in the second offering when Costa Rica look to justify their lofty billing in the tournament when they go up against a Bermuda side who must be kicking themselves for losing their opener.
I was a little concerned about the output in front of goal from Costa Rica in their first match and although they found the back of the net on four occasions three of them had a freaky element to them so I’m not altogether certain about them yet. Bermuda actually impressed me but couldn’t finish their dinner and paid the price at the end of the night. They are right up against it here and how heavily they are beaten will determine on how much Costa Rica want to take them out by. I suspect the odds are a shade too heavily weighted in their favour but I don’t really want to be relying on Bermuda. I’m a non-runner here.
