Grand Slam of Darts 2023 – Day 1 Evening Session Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the Grand Slam of Darts concludes with the evening session where the four groups which did not get underway in the afternoon do so on what should be a good night of darts in Wolverhampton on Saturday.

We saw some big names in the afternoon but the evening cast list looks particularly strong on a night where the likes of the world champion Michael Smith, Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright get their campaign started.

First Four Matches

We begin the evening in Group A of the competition where James Wade will begin his quest for another deep run in Wolverhampton when he faces the European Tour winner from this year in Krzysztof Ratajski. We move to Group G for the second match of the night as Rob Cross starts his tournament against the tall Dutch ace Martijn Kleermaker before arguably the pick of the matches on the opening day as Dave Chisnall takes on Stephen Bunting. We reach the halfway point of the evening with another good looking match between Dirk van Duijvenbode and Gary Anderson in Group C.

Later Four Matches

We move into the second part of the evening with the World Grand Prix winner Luke Humphries on show. The 2022 semi-finalist will meet Steve Lennon to conclude the first matches in Group C. The newly crowned European champion Peter Wright will be next onto the stage when he takes on the American player Stowe Buntz before the eagerly anticipated clash between Michael van Gerwen and Fallon Sherrock makes up the penultimate match of the night. The evening session concludes with the world champion Michael Smith beginning his Grand Slam title defence when he takes on the youngster Nathan Girvan.

Betting

Much with the afternoon session, I’m not in a massive rush to jump into these best of nine sprints, at least not until we have assessed the runners and riders but once again we have an odds against shot that I can’t ignore. This time it comes in the form of Stephen Bunting to get the better of Dave Chisnall in what should be a cracking contest should both perform to their best, but there is no guarantee that Chisnall will do that based on recent TV results.

Chisnall has had a great week on the floor leading up to this tournament it has to be said but he has lost in the first round of the last three TV events, tournaments he was fancied to do well in given his form on the European Tour this season. Bunting played really well at the European Championship and had he clicked his doubles earlier against Chris Dobey he’d have done deep in that event. That is the issue here but Chisnall has missed plenty on the big stage in those three first round losses. I don’t think there is much between these two so Bunting at odds against will do me.
