After the flat racing season got underway in Ireland last week we are building into the campaign a little more on Saturday when a turf card takes place at Bellewstown, which isn’t one of the immediately recognisable tracks in that part of the world.
We have had a good look at the card and of the seven races it is the third of them which catches our eye from a betting standpoint. We’ve picked out one selection to form our Irish portfolio on Saturday.
2.30 Bellewstown
Preview
One of the lesser known tracks in Ireland, Bellewstown is a sharp track with an uphill finish and all that leads to a low drawn horse that likes to race prominently. There’s quite a big field of 15 here over the mile so I’m guessing there’ll be hard luck stories aplenty. James MacAuley holds a very strong field, saddling the first 2 in the market with Ghumama and Scarlet Dancer. The former, whilst on a good mark, does have the odd tendency to start slowly which is offputting whilst the latter has a question mark over this trip on the likely ground and with the stiff finish against him. The Bog Bank goes well here and is a big danger to all but the ground might just hinder her chances and James Henry has been handed a poor draw in 13.

Betting
In an open race, I like Tellthemimhere, having his first run for a new yard. Drawn in 4 with a prominent run style, and ridden by a very good jockey who’s been firing in a few winners, there are plenty of positives to recommend her. The big negative is that she’s yet to win in 17 starts but she’s finished 2nd in a trio of maidens and, as a result of her winless streak, her handicap mark is now just 64 after starting off at 77. Since her 3 year old days, she’s run 7 times on turf over 7 furlongs or a mile on ground no better than good and it’s her RPRs that impress me. A low of 69 and a high of 80, with 4 others 76 or above, suggest a horse much better than its current mark. That’s in stark contrast to her 7 runs on the all weather with RPRs ranging from 59 to 69. Her last 2 runs were on the all weather and they were her best runs on that surface, according to the figures, both times noting she was staying on all the while but didn’t quite have the pace. Given the nuances of this track, that should be a benefit here and she rates a nice each way shot.
