Horse Racing – Haydock & Ascot Saturday 8th August Tips and Betting Preview

In keeping with the trend since racing restarted a couple of months ago, we have a busy Saturday and a high quality one to look forward to as the build up towards the Ebor meeting at York starts to intensify.

They race at Haydock, Ascot and Newmarket in the UK in the afternoon as well as Cork over in Ireland, while there are evening meetings at Uttoxeter and Kilbeggan to enjoy as well. We’ve looked through the cards and come up with five bets.

A mile Class 3 handicap with Dubai Mirage the favourite of the 11 strong field.  He easily won a Kempton maiden but disappointed subsequently at Royal Ascot.  Yes My Boy is an unexposed 3 year old and has finished 2nd on his last 2 starts but is up another 3lbs.  Nicklaus has been running well but was 10th in the Silver Hunt Cup & the bet is one who finished in front of him that day.

Betting

Red Bond is hard to ignore.  He won a Newcastle handicap by 8 lengths in January & his mark shot up into the 90s.  Off his revised mark, he was 3rd behind Daarik before running a cracking 5th behind Sir Busker in the Silver Hunt Cup from an average draw (the 4 in front were all drawn towards the stands rail).  The form of that race is working out well with the winner since finishing 2nd in the Bunbury Cup, the runner up is Listed placed, the 3rd has won & finished 2nd in a pair of handicaps whilst the 7th dotted up in a competitive handicap at Glorious Goodwood.  Eased in grade & with a good jockey booking, he looks certain to go well.

Tips

Back Red Bond (e/w) for a 1.5/10 stake at 8.00 BetVictor BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)

10 runners for this Class 2 handicap over the straight 6 furlongs.  It’s hard to pick holes in the recent form of the lightly raced pair Theotherside & Chil Chil but neither have raced at the track which puts me off a little.  Highland Dress has been in decent form this summer & was 2nd at Newmarket 2 starts ago but it’s another from that race I like.

Betting

Woven was 2 places behind Highland Dress in 4th that day but raced wide & was poorly positioned when the pace quickened.  He’s 2lbs better off here, which can be increased to 5lb if adding the claims of today’s jockey.  Previous to that, he ran a cracker when 6th in the Silver Wokingham off 2lbs higher & would have been closer had he made his challenge more towards the stand rail rather than coming up the middle.  He did win a Meydan handicap in February off this mark & was 3rd in this race last year off 1lb lower (that was his only other start at the track).  At a big price, he should run his race.

Tips

Back Woven (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 15.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)

Another Class 2 handicap with 10 runners but this time over a mile.  Shelir was 8th in the International Stakes here last time out behind the impressive Blue Mist.  He had a poor draw that day but was switched after the start towards the favoured stands rail.  He didn’t get the clearest of runs at the 2 furlong pole but it didn’t really affect the result.

Betting

In the same race, Kasbaan was similarly poorly drawn but ran a super race at odds of 80/1 when 2 places and half a length in front of Shelir in 6th.  He made his challenge widest of any so his run can be easily upgraded.  He’ll be suited by the step up to 1 mile as all 3 career wins have been at this trip or further.  This summer, he was 3rd at HQ & was then midfield in the Bunbury Cup off 1lb higher before that last run.  Fast ground suits & with the trip, track & ground all in his favour, he’s the value bet here.

Tips

Back Kasbaan (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 7.50 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-3)

Over a mile and a half are 12 runners for another Class 2 handicap where Caradoc is the favourite.  He’s often well fancied & overbacked, and that seems to be the case here.  He represents no value.   Omnivega has won all 3 of his starts 3 year but all of those were on the all weather & this is tougher.

Betting

Last time out winner over course & distance, Jeremiah is the selection.  He’s taken to improve on his narrow victory over Sam Cooke off a 6lb lower mark when he wore first time blinkers.  They are on again today.  The pair pulled 5 lengths clear of the 3rd & the rest of the field were spread out half the length of the straight.  He travelled really well that day & that should help here as should his assured stamina.   For a 5 year old, he’s lightly raced & there’s definitely more to come.  His yard is in top form too, with the yard’s last 2 runners winning & 4 of the last 9.   In an average race for the grade, he should go close.

Tips

Back Jeremiah (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 8.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)

Our final bet of a busy Saturday is in a Class 3 handicap at the Lancashire track over 7 furlongs.  13 go to post & it’s an open event with bookies going 5/1 the field.  Arbalet, Irreverent & Breath Of Air all have solid claims & they are the 3 vying for favouritism but Northernpowerhouse also holds sound claims having won 2 of his last 3.

Betting

At a bigger price, Triggered is taken to improve on his first run over this trip.  In 3 runs this summer in this grade, he’s finished 4th, 4th & 8th, beaten around 3.5 lengths each time but staying on well.  He was nearest at the finish in all 3 starts which were over a furlong shorter so this step up is sure to suit.  There’s loads of pace in the race too which will help & he is taken to pick these up late on.  Not only is the trip a positive, the ground is in his favour as is the easing in weights (he’s now 4lbs lower than his first run this summer).  At a nice each way price, he’s taken to end the day in style.

Tips

Back Triggered (e/w) for a 0.75/10 stake at 9.00 Betfair Sportsbook BOG (⅕ odds 1-4)
