After the highs of Glorious Goodwood and the Galway Festival, things come back down to normal this week with some pretty mundane fayre. You don’t get paid out any less for finding winners at this level though so we’ll be giving it a good go on Monday.
There are plenty of meetings to get stuck into but after a look at what is on offer we have decided to stick to the afternoon racing at Haydock and Yarmouth. We’ll kick off another week of racing with a couple of punts.

The first division of this 10 furlong handicap for apprentice jockeys sees 10 runners going to post in Class 5 company. Makthecat heads the market after a pair of placed runs here but both of those were on softish ground & he has quicker conditions to contend with here. Red Derek is another to have run well here recently when 2nd over this course & distance whilst Aegeus holds good claims for Marco Ghiani after losing out by a neck on his last start. He’s been nudged up 3lbs but that still looks within range.
Betting
In a competitive heat, Embrace The Moment, from the Ian Williams yard, is the selection. Off a mark here of 69, this 4 year old had run now 86-rated Pennywhistle & 96-rated Big Baby Bull close as a 2 year old and, whilst that is 2 years ago, she still retains ability. On her reappearance, she won over this trip & in this grade at Pontefract, going clear by 3 lengths. She’s only 4lb higher here which I think underestimates her chances. She didn’t back up that run on his last start but soft ground, an extra quarter of a mile & the track (has now disappointed twice at Chepstow) were all against her. With conditions now in her favour, it would be no surprise to see this filly try to make all from the inside stall &, at rewarding each way odds, she rates a solid bet.

Another field of 10 runners here, for this Class 4 handicap over 7 furlongs. Hollie Doyle, on her return from her exertions in France, takes the ride on worthy favourite Breath Of Joy but my concern would be the quick ground that we almost always get at this track. Rovaniemi has been running ok but needs an ease in mark having been turned over off this mark on his last 3 runs. Gallipoli is a big danger but despite valid excuses last time at Windsor, I still would have liked to have seen more.
Betting
At the prices, top weight Fighting Temeraire is the bet. This 7 year old has a decent strike rate of 7 wins from 34 career starts and, scanning the form, there’s 3 things to stand out. He has a definite class ceiling (Class 3 is a step too far), this 7 furlong trip is ideal & he needs good or better ground on turf. Today ticks all 3 of those boxes. In fact his last run on turf in this grade was 10 starts ago where he finished a head 2nd, albeit off a 10lb lower mark. Since then, he’s raced 8 times on the all weather, winning 3 of his 5 completed starts over this trip so it’s clear he’s still bang in form. On his return to turf 2 weeks ago, he ran an eyecatching race finishing 6th of 19 in a much stronger heat (Class 3) than this behind Documenting. The front 3 all came from the rear that day so, as he raced up with the pace there, we can upgrade his performance too. 7 horses from that race have been out since; 1 has been up in class to Class 2 but, of the other 6, 4 have been placed & 3 of those were in Class 3 company. Those placed horses finished 2nd, 7th, 9th & 16th at York so, assuming he can run to a similar level of form here, our selection must surely be in the shake up at double figure odds.
