Horse Racing – Monday 10th June 7.35 Pontefract Betting Preview

7.35 Pontefract

Preview

The feature race of the evening is a Class 2 handicap over a mile and a half where we have a clear favourite in Caliburn from the Andrew Balding yard.

Caliburn’s place at the head of the market is based on a good 5th in a decent York handicap.  That was his seasonal reappearance and he should come on for it but, with rain expected, there are ground questions to answer.

Sleeping Lion keeps getting beat at short prices and is up in grade tonight.  With a stiff mark to contend with too, it’s hard to see him winning.   Blue Laureate is more of a danger having finished runner up 3 times recently, 1 off which was off a mark 1lb higher than he races off today.  He will also like the ground.

However, in an open race, there’s a couple fancied to fight out the finish.  Everything For You is out of Pivotal and will love the ground.  In fact, the more rain the better for this one who absolutely bolted up on soft ground in a handicap last year.  That was off 8lb lower but he’s run very well since.  He opened this year with a 3rd off this mark before finishing 2nd to another of tonight’s runners, Claire Underwood, on his next start.  He’s 2lb better off with that rival and the lack of pace didn’t suit the selection there so there’s every reason to suggest he’ll reverse the form.  Another he has to reverse form with is the favourite who was 2 lengths in front of him at York last time out.  The ground was firm that day and the preferred cheekpieces, back on tonight, were left off.  With conditions in his favour, a big run is on the cards.

The 2nd bet is Not So Sleepy who is Hughie Morrison’s only runner on the card tonight.  He was terrifically consistent last term running some big races in defeat, not least his 2nd in the November Handicap on soft going.  That was off a mark of 96 and he’s down 1lb to 95 tonight.  Since then, he’s been over hurdles, running 3 times and winning one.  His only flat start this year was 7 weeks ago at Epsom where he was given the strangest of rides by Ryan Moore.  He was held up miles off the pace and despite making some good late headway, he was never getting to the leaders.  Ridden more prominently, he should be seen in a better light and provided the rain comes, he’s sure to be in the mix at the business end.
