It is another busy day of racing on Saturday and while we have to wait another week for the Investec Derby at Epsom, the Irish version takes place at the Curragh. We will have a separate preview for the big race in due course but there are other cards to get stuck into first.
The Irish attention is all at the Curragh but in the UK there are afternoon cards at Redcar, Newcastle and Newmarket while the evening action comes from Lingfield. We’ve had a look through the English action and have come up with one in the big race at HQ.

Despite a small field of 9, this 7 furlong Group 3 Criterion Stakes looks a really good contest. Limato won this last year and is favourite for this year’s renewal but he’s now a 8 year old & last year had the benefit of a prep run. Vale Of Kent is his nearest challenger in the market & Frankie Dettori takes the ride. He’s a really good handicapper & ran a cracker when 4th in the Royal Hunt Cup but he looks short in the betting considering he’s up in grade.
Mubtasim & On The Warpath are 2 more good handicapper’s that have been doing battle over in Meydan but need to step up to figure here. Sir Dancealot is a nice type but a 5lb penalty will put paid to his chances.

At the prices, Turjomaan looks to have a super chance. He ran flat on his only start this year but that was at Royal Ascot in the Group 1 Queen Anne. That was arguably the hottest race of the whole week so the fact his trainer pitched him in there speaks volumes although he’ll be disappointed that he was last after pulling hard.
In his short career, he won twice at 2 & then won a novice on reappearance last year in fine style before finishing 2nd in a Group 3 at Glorious Goodwood when getting outpointed close home behind Dukes Of Hazzard. That confirmed to me he’s a 7 furlong horse rather than a miler & the return to this specialist trip is sure to suit.
Jim Crowley rides for the in-form Roger Varian and it’s worth noting that Crowley had this horse in one of his five to follow this year. He also had Hukum, Khaloosy & Molatham in that list & each of them won at Royal Ascot so he clearly knows a good one when he sees it. On this better ground over a more suitable trip, he’s sure to go very close.
