Horse Racing: Newmarket – Wednesday 19th April Tips and Betting Preview

The flat racing season continues on Wednesday when the second day of the Craven meeting takes place at Newmarket and while we are still getting the campaign up to full speed and waiting for the Guineas to come around, some decent action is on offer.

The Fielden Stakes is one of the highlights of the second day of the meeting but not much stands out in that. Instead it is the opening race of the card which draws our attention where we are going in with the one bet.

The opener on Day 2 of the Craven meeting is an absolute cracker where there’s a field of 15 unexposed 3 year olds in a Class 4 handicap over a mile.  The fact that bookies go around 13/2 the field and there’s nothing bigger than 22/1 indicates how competitive it is but, still, I cannot resist having a go at finding the winner.  After a promising handicap debut at Nottingham 2 weeks ago, Richard Hannon’s Supreme King is right to the fore in the markets.  He’s finished second on 4 occasions but has yet to visit the winner’s enclosure, whilst he’s been hit with a 4lbs higher mark for the short head defeat.  Elwasme is the mount of William Buick and, whilst he brings loads of potential, form figures of 6-4-4 in novice events doesn’t particularly appeal.

Betting

Burdett Road – I like the chances of this Newmarket trained runner who won his most recent start, 6 weeks ago at Lingfield on the all weather.  Before that run, he’d yet to win in 5 starts but had twice finished runner up at Wolverhampton, most recently behind the 86-rated Mighty River.  He was also comfortably beaten at Kempton but the trip over a mile and a half was his downfall that day as he pulled much too hard.   Returned to a more suitable trip of a mile at Lingfield, he led from the gate and fended off all challenges, coming home 2 lengths in front of Puntarelle who was a further 2 lengths ahead of Dutch Kingdom.  Both the 2nd and 3rd have been out since, and both won.  The former won a novice event at Chelmsford whilst the latter landed a handicap over a mark of 77.  Given our selection has a mark 7lbs higher but had 4 lengths in hand, that suggests to me he could be very well handicapped and, with improvement to come, he is ranked as the best bet of the day.

Tips

Back Burdett Road (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 15.00 William Hill BOG (⅕ odds 1-5)
