There is a lot of good horse racing cards around on Saturday but after a decent week at York we are letting the superstars have their moment in the sun and instead focusing on some of the lesser class stuff across the meetings up and down the country. We’ve picked out three value bets across the afternoon and into the evening.
3.55 Thirsk

16 runners for this 1 mile handicap where Helovaplan & Club Wexford are vying for favouritism. Neither of them have done much justify their prices so there’s value to be had further down the betting.

I like the chances of the lightly raced 5 year old Waarif. He’s a consistent gelding that has run well several times in defeat without managing to get his head in front since moving to this yard. Most of his runs have been on the sand & 3 starts back, he was beaten in a photo at Newcastle off this mark, over this trip & in this grade. He was then dropped a furlong at the same track & was finishing well but that confirmed to me he’s a miler.
Up to a mark of 80 last time out, he was racing on turf for the first time in 2 years. He was a close up 5th of 14 pulling 2 lengths clear off the rest, including Club Wexford who was 4 lengths back. Both horses are dropped 2lbs today so I see no reason why the tables will be turned. That was over 7 furlongs on soft ground &, being out of Indian Ridge, this fast ground should be right up his street. Off a winnable mark and with both ground & trip in his favour, I’m expecting a big run.

This looks a real good handicap with Ripp Orf, the winner of last weeks Victoria Cup, Pouvoir Magique & Surrey Hope heading the market. I think Surrey Hope is the most likely winner of the 3 but I’m hoping for a shock & backing one at double figure odds.

Wahash has been underestimated by the market & looks to hold a solid chance here. He’s a miler; 7 furlongs is too short & he doesn’t truly stay 10 furlongs. He’s won just 2 of his 17 starts but has yet to strike on turf despite finishing 2nd on 4 occasions.
This year, he’s run 3 times opening up with a win on the sand over a mile off a mark of 94. He won well that day, quickening up smartly. He’s just 3lbs higher here, off a mark of 97. He then went back to Lingfield on all weather championships day for the apprentice handicap. Despite finishing 12th of 13, he had a troubled passage & was staying on late. He would have finished much closer over another furlong. Back at a mile last time out at Wetherby, he ran well on soft ground, just 2 lengths behind Original Choice. Better ground will suit here & Dettori is back on board who has won 2 & finished 2nd 4 times in 9 rides.
With fast ground, a mile & jockey booking all in his favour, our selection is the most likely of our field to trouble the front 3 in the market.

Back Wahash (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 11.00 Ladbrokes BOG (1/5 odds 1-3)

A 6 furlong sprint to end the day & another competitive heat. I’m siding with Envisaging who is another that has been campaigned largely on the sand. He’s had a decent winter, winning once but running creditably on each of his 5 runs.
He’s had a 73 day break which should have freshened him up. He goes well after a break, finishing 2nd & 3rd on his 2 starts after such an absence. In fact, he was 2nd after a break the last time he faced fast ground which is what he’ll get here. I think this is his best trip; over the last year, he’s been campaigned anywhere from 6 furlongs to a mile but a fast run 6 furlongs should see him at his best.
A smooth traveller & with a top jockey on board, he has a great chance with the ground in his favour & a return to a straight track another plus. In an open event, his price looks too big.
Tips
Back Envisaging (e/w) for a 1/10 stake at 12.00 Boylesports BOG (¼ odds 1-4)
