ICC Champions Trophy 2017 – New Zealand Team Guide & Betting Preview

The World Cup finalists are becoming renowned bridesmaids at these major events and will be highly motivated to finally get their hands on silverware in this tournament. New Zealand love playing the role of the underdog so it certainly won’t concern them that they have that tag this year.

Strengths

The strength of this New Zealand side is their batting depth. A number of all-rounders have been called into the squad so in any match they are genuinely likely to bat down to number nine if needed. With the likes of Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor experienced in English conditions New Zealand should bat very well in the competition.

Weaknesses

If there is no swing around there has to be a concern over their bowling attack in this tournament. They don’t have an out and out pace bowler in their side and while they don’t lack for options a number of them could be cannon fodder on flat pitches. If there is swing there is no issue.

Betting

I do have my concerns about the New Zealand bowling attack and in truth there isn’t a whole lot of value around in that particular market but there is one which takes my fancy in the batting one.

Martin Guptill has a wonderful record in England averaging a shade under 63 in ODI cricket and he has a decent record against all three group opponents too. The modern one day rules make it easier for Guptill to get up and running in his innings and even though these grounds are bigger than the ones he plays on in New Zealand they are not that big.

Guptill warmed up for the tournament with a ton and having played for a county he’ll know the conditions. He’s my idea of the top New Zealand batsman in this tournament.
