India and Australia will get their ODI series underway in Hyderabad on Saturday, and although there is some wiggle room for whoever loses the first game of the five, both teams will be eager to control things from the front which should make for a competitive match.
The contest was nicely set up when Australia won both the T20 matches earlier in the week. India are likely to be smarting from that, as they have become accustomed to not losing series so this first game should be a cracker.
India
The Indians should head into this series full of confidence from the fact that it was barely six weeks ago when they won an ODI series in Australia. They will know that they began that series slowly but turned it around and although they won’t want to repeat that here, this is a five match series so it is not the end of the world if they take a game to get up to speed again.
I’m interested to see how this India batting line up go here, and moving forward I actually hope Australia get stuck in with the new ball as India have all the boxes ticked ahead of the World Cup, apart from whether their lower order can get them runs in a pressure situation. We know their top order is high class and their bowling variety is as good as anything in the game.
Australia
I think the struggles of Australia in this format are well known now and it will be interesting to see if their heroics from the T20 series rubs off on them in any way over these five matches. There aren’t many matches between now and the World Cup for them to find some form and consistency so they really could do with doing something strong on the remainder of this tour.
I actually think Australia’s bowling is going to be ok in this series, so it might be that the outcome of it is determined by how well they bat. They did not offer up the necessary goods with the bat in the series back home and conditions out here are more alien to them but they have serious individual talent in their side. If they can put three of those together at the same time you never know.
Team News
Hardik Pandya continues to miss out for the home side so Vijay Shankar is expected to play the allrounder role. KL Rahul appears to be set for a last chance to prove himself for the World Cup and he could bat at four instead of Ambati Rayudu.
Australia are set to bring Alex Carey back into their side after he sat out he T20 matches. Shaun Marsh is injured so Peter Handscomb is likely to play as a batsman. Aaron Finch will return to open the batting.

Betting
I will ease my way into this series with just the one bet and assess how both sides line up and go about their business before getting a little more expansive with things as we progress to better grounds for bigger bets and things. There is a performance that I like heading in here which will act as my interest in the match.
MS Dhoni has been in good form against Australia in recent times. He made 29* and 40 in the two T20 matches here in India and in the last two ODIs back in Australia earlier in the year he contributed 55* and 87* so he’s in decent touch against this opponent. In these conditions you can never truly rule out a catch behind or a stumping off the spinner which would give us some bonus points so over 40.5 looks to be the way forward for me.
