Two teams who won their opening match of the Indian Premier League season gets the second set of fixtures underway on Tuesday when the Delhi Capitals host the defending champions Chennai Super Kings at the Feroz Shah Kotla.
Whoever wins this one will get the early initiative in the early league table and will have the confidence to kick on and convert their platform into a substantial campaign. The losers won’t be affected too much so we should get a good game of cricket here.
Delhi Capitals
I had a feeling we would see some good things from the Capitals going into the season and we certainly did in their opening match. They batted nicely to begin with against the Mumbai Indians and set the platform up for their big hitters who certainly did not disappoint in what was a very good batting display.
From there, they were never in any danger of not winning when they were in the field. A very good bowling attack bowled with good discipline and soon had the Mumbai batting line up needing snookers. They finished things off pretty comprehensively in what was an excellent display and encouragingly there is more to come from them.
Chennai Super Kings
As they so often do, the Chennai Super Kings eased past Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match but we didn’t really find out any answers to the questions that we had over them going into the campaign. Part of that is because RCB were useless but also the pitch in Chepauk was an abomination and you can’t learn anything from such strips.
The one thing we did get to see though was that the Super Kings are not here for a party and a good time. They are here to win as evidenced by how ruthless they were in the field, even allowing for a few gifts that the Royal Challengers gave them. They should have the chance to express their best cricket here, if they are good enough to do so of course.
Team News
Delhi Capitals could have Chris Morris available after he has finished with international duties with South Africa. He could replace Keemo Paul in the side. Sandeep Lamichhane may well come in too with Trent Boult or Kagiso Rabada making way.
Chennai Super Kings may need to alter the balance of their attack which would bring David Willey into the equation. You would think Harbhajan Singh would be most likely to sit out for him. If that doesn’t happen Sam Billings and Faf du Plessis will be hoping to come in.

Betting
It is hard to know what to make of the Chennai Super Kings because they played on a horror pitch in their opening match. They will win a lot more matches than they lose in those conditions but whether it has helped them when they come into different conditions at the Kotla I’m not convinced. I do think they’ll have to go some to beat the Delhi Capitals though.
You could argue that Delhi lack a bit of depth to their batting and I wouldn’t necessarily disagree with that but they have a top four that aren’t stupid at the same time and if they do lose early wickets they will rebuild. What I like about them though is they have a ton of bowling options which means they can exploit all conditions. I’m not convinced Chennai have a seam attack to thrive away from Chepauk although time will tell on that. To go from that pitch to this one will not be easy for them though so it is the Capitals for me here.
