IPL 2023 – Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Titans Tips and Betting Preview

The Indian Premier League continues with another match in the IPL 2023 season on Tuesday as the Delhi Capitals look to get off the mark for the campaign when they go up against the defending champions Gujarat Titans.

The Capitals were heavily beaten in their opening match of the tournament whereas the Titans pretty much picked up where they left off in winning the title last season. The Capitals are back home for the first time since the pandemic so this is a big evening for them.

Delhi Capitals

After missing out on the playoffs by one spot last season, the Delhi Capitals would have been hoping to get off to a fast start this time around but they were on the back foot from the get go in their opening match against the Lucknow Super Giants and couldn’t really force their way back into the game. Ultimately they were undone by one special batting effort and a very good individual spell of bowling but they will know there is natural improvement to come.

They were missing a couple of key bowlers for that opening game and if they had either of them then they might have been able to keep Kyle Mayers in check and offered themselves a route back into the contest. The one issue Delhi had going into the season was the lack of elite all-rounders in their ranks and while the Impact Player rule will protect them somewhat against that, there is still a bit of an issue on how to balance the team.

Gujarat Titans

The Gujarat Titans won the Indian Premier League title on their opening campaign and now they will be looking to be the first team to defend the crown successfully since the Mumbai Indians achieved that in 2020. Were they to do it in their first two seasons in the league it would be an incredible achievement. You sense if they are going to win the title again they will need to improve on their opening effort but you would imagine that there is more to come from them.

Gujarat are extremely efficient at judging a run chase. It looked like they might have been set a daunting total by the Chennai Super Kings in the opening game of the campaign but they made it look very easy. That was a feature of their title charge a year ago and with David Miller on his way over from South Africa they are only going to get stronger. If there is a concern it is the depth with the ball but the Impact Player rule might assist with that.

Key Players

The Gujarat Titans were put to the sword by the Chennai opener Rujurat Gaikwad in the first game so there could be an opportunity for Prithvi Shaw to show what he can do at the top of the order and get the Capitals in front of the game.

Rashid Khan hit the ground running this season with a spell of bowling that kept his side in the game in that opening match. His spell wasn’t just economical but he took wickets as well and he was there with the bat at the end too.

Betting

We are still waiting for the first low scoring game in the tournament but with the competition having been away from Delhi for so long I don’t expect it to come here. There was a T20 international between India and South Africa where last year where the visitors made mincemeat of the 211 that India posted in that match and given that Delhi Capitals are basically playing specialists in this tournament I expect high scoring matches where they are concerned.

By that I mean that have made no secret of the fact that they are going to pack their team with batters or bowlers depending on what they end up doing first and then use the Impact Player to balance things out for the second innings so they could bat very deep. Even without batting deep this is a team with Dave Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw and Rovman Powell potentially all in their top six so they are full of runs and we know that the Gujarat Titans are especially if David Miller has arrived for the contest. The boundary line varies from 40.5 to 43.5 for this match. That 40.5 is a little too low in my eyes.
