The Indian Premier League is back in Delhi on Wednesday as the IPL 2024 season continues when the Delhi Capitals look to make their way into the middle of the table when they take on the Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Both these sides are below where they would want to be in the table and with one of the top four spots looking close to being sewn up, neither of these two will want to slide any further away from the chasing pack above them so this is a big game for both sides.
Delhi Capitals
The Delhi Capitals have been hit or miss in this tournament. Generally when they have got it wrong they have been punished badly but when they have got it right they have looked a very good side and have picked up some emphatic results. Those results have been few and far between though so they are going to need to be much more consistent in terms of getting wins over the remainder of the campaign if they are going to be a factor at the end of it.
The big thing for the Capitals is that they are one of the best teams with the ball in the powerplay. Generally the way this tournament is going, as they found out to their cost in a rare time where they got it wrong in the first six overs last time out, is that if you let teams set a platform carnage ensues at the end of the innings. They need the opening bowlers to continue to deliver. There is no shortage of fireworks of their own with the bat so if they can keep opposing scores respectable they should be able to pick up wins.
Gujarat Titans
The Gujarat Titans have been in existence for two seasons and they have made the final in both of them. They have some work to do if they are going to make the final this time around it has to be said, but they aren’t out of the equation by any stretch of the imagination. They are going to need to win potentially four of their last six matches though so now is the time for them to find some consistency both in their performances and their results.
The issue the Titans are having is that they aren’t getting as many runs from the middle order as they usually would do and that is seeing them having to pull off miracles at the end of run chases which no side can do on a regular basis. The positive for the Titans is that they still have a bowling attack which is as good as anything in the competition although even then they have conceded 195 or more in three of their eight matches. It just doesn’t feel quite as organised for the Titans this term.

Key Players
We have seen why Jake Fraser-McGurk is so highly rated in Australia on a couple of occasions in this competition and if he can light up again here he could go a long way to taking the match away from the Gujarat Titans.
After a dismal batting effort in the last match against the Delhi Capitals, the Titans will be hoping for a marked improvement here. In order to get it they could do with a significant knock from their best batter and captain Shubman Gill.
Betting
It is rare that I like the Delhi Capitals but this is one time I do think they are overpriced. They have the huge mental advantage of knowing that they didn’t just beat the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad but they absolutely demolished them and if the Capitals can take a couple of early wickets or so and get the Titans under a bit of pressure it wouldn’t be the biggest surprise in the world were they to crumble again, especially with their middle order not really delivering the goods.
The one concern for the Delhi Capitals is their death bowling which isn’t good, but that only becomes an issue either if they fail to pick up early wickets in a run chase or if they bat first and don’t put a particularly good score on the board. If they bat second you would think they will be fine and if they can get out in front with the bat should they bat first then scoreboard pressure could play a huge part. At the prices and with the knowledge that they have already battered Gujarat this season I’m happy to take the Capitals.
