IPL 2025 – Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Capitals Tips and Betting Preview

We have a double header of action in the Indian Premier League on Saturday and in the opening match of the two the Delhi Capitals put their IPL 2025 perfect record on the line when they head to Chepauk to take on the Chennai Super Kings.

It is one win from three for the Super Kings in this campaign so they will be keen to get their ledger levelled up as quickly as possible whereas the Capitals will be aiming to go three from three and hit the front in the league table.

Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings are generally one of the more solid teams in the competition so it is a little bit of a surprise that they have slipped to two defeats in their opening three matches, especially having dominated the Mumbai Indians in their first game. You would have to say that the run chase in their second outing was very strange. It was almost like they used it as a net session to get some batters into form. They fared better against the Rajasthan Royals but still failed a chase a score that they should have got.

The concern will be their bowling attack. In these two recent defeats they have conceded 196/7 and 182/9 and those are big scores for a Chennai side which probably isn’t designed to put up 200 totals without thinking about it. They probably have an all-rounder too many and they are definitely a quality bowler with the new ball light and it is those two facets, which probably aren’t the worst things they could have issues with, that leads to them coming out on the wrong side of matches.

Delhi Capitals

The Delhi Capitals went into the season under the radar. A lot of that was because of the changes that they went through on and off the field and to be fair their recent record in the competition was nothing to write home about to suggest that they were going to do anything this season. We might only have two matches to judge them on but the start to the campaign has been encouraging. We should acknowledge that they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against Lucknow in their opening game but they demolished the Sunrisers last time out.

Delhi have had a light schedule so far. The season started two weeks ago and they have only played twice so they have had time to bed in as a team and work out their strategies and we should expect them to continue to play well. We saw in that first game that they can bat very deep and we saw in the second one that when their big players come to the party they have a good side. This is their toughest test of the season so far but you get the impression they will cope with it.

Key Players

Noor Ahmad is the leading wicket taker in the competition and you get the feeling that the Chennai Super Kings could do with him picking up wickets in his spell to just halt the rhythm and momentum of the Delhi innings.

Abhishek Porel looked in amazing touch with the bat in the second Delhi Capitals game against the Sunrisers Hyderabad and being a leftie he could be key here because he will be able to negate the spin of Ravi Jadeja which Chennai use to slow sides down.

Betting

I’m a little bit surprised that we can get the Delhi Capitals to clear a powerplay target of 54.5 runs here. It is well known that the best time to bat in Chennai is against the new ball and I expect the Delhi top order to come out all guns blazing to try and get ahead of the rate before the spinners come along and halt the progress. Delhi have been opening with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Faf du Plessis with Abhishek Porel and KL Rahul in after them.

There have been two matches in Chennai this season with Mumbai Indians posting 52/3 in the powerplay against this Super Kings outfit and then Bangalore made 56/1 although the spinners bowled a couple of overs in that powerplay. In the last game, Khaleel Ahmed bowled three of the powerplay overs, Jamie Overton bowled two and Ravi Ashwin bowled the other but there is no left-hander opening for Delhi so I’d be surprised if Ashwin bowls in the powerplay. Delhi are determined to go hard and I expect them to clear this line.
